Holman Island collection : 1936-1970

The collection contains a history class paper on Holman's Island, Prince Edward Island, by Fraser E. Clark, and several newspaper articles about James L. Holman and the Island Park Hotel. The collection also includes a photograph of the Island Park Hotel (ca. 1900) and a colour photograph of an Island road.

The fonds consists of minutes, financial statements, committee reports, newspaper clippings, programs and syllabi from the Prince Edward Island Music Festival Association and the annual Music Festival between 1946 and 1977. This material, as well as programs and syllabi for various other Music Festivals across the country for these years, is arranged by year. There are also minutes, secretary reports and digest reports of the annual convention of the Federation of Canadian Music Festivals between 1956 and 1977. The fonds also contain seven audio reels of the 1970 Provincial Finals and unidentified competitions.

The collection consists of ten photographs and one postcard. Photographs include images of Charlottetown such as the post office, Provincial Building, Fort Edward, as well as the Victoria Park Roadway, Queen Square, Queen Street, and Victoria Row in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Another photograph depicts a Mi'Kmaq woman and a child standing outside a teepee. The postcard is entitled, "A Million Dollar Train transporting silver foxes from Tignish to the ranch of The Chas Dalton Silver Black Fox Co. Ltd." Individuals pictured in front of the train include Charles Dalton, M.G. Mooney, Edward Martin, Dr. Lundie, W.B. Prowse, Andy Bagnall and Pat Dorsey.

Smith, Alley collection

This collection includes 1168 textual items, plus 235 images collected by Judge George Alley and Henry Smith pertaining largely to the early history of Prince Edward Island. A large proportion of the collection deals with the history of Charlottetown and the colony of Prince Edward Island during its early years of settlement. The collection is divided into 25 series, based on the arrangement that was imposed by the donor, and possibly earlier arrangement prior to donation to the Public Archives and Records Office. Arrangement was based on provenance, subject or contents or type of document. Series order has been rearranged to reflect government documents, family papers and miscellaneous. Many of the series include government records such as bills, acts, proclamations and petitions, Journals of the House of Assembly and Legislative Council, minutes of Council and claims, proposals and reports to the government. The collection includes several series of records pertaining to a number of families and individuals including: George Alley and the Alley family, Fanning family, Wright family, Bagnall family, Isaac Smith, James Bardin Palmer, and Edward Palmer. The collection includes lantern slides, photographs, textual materials and plans. The subject of the photographs is early Charlottetown, and its residents. Photographs include streetscapes, public buildings and private residences, and portraits of city officials and clergymen. The collection also includes records pertaining to the following subjects: inns, taverns, bridges, ferries, Loyalists, schools and education, the Land Question, military, agriculture, the administration of justice, postal service, land records, Charlottetown Market House, Court House, and Province House. A number of the documents in this collection are copies of original documents, many copied at the request of Judge George Alley in pursuit of his interest in writing a history of Prince Edward Island.

Rankin, Morrison family fonds

This fonds consists of eight letters written between members of the Rankin and Morrison families of Scotland and PEI. Neil, Coun Douly, and George are the three generations of Rankin family whose correspondence is documented in this fonds. Roderick Morrison, whose correspondence is also included in this fonds, was the tenth child of Hector and Marion. The correspondence relays information about immigrating to PEI, as well as information about friends and family members of the Rankin and Morrison clans. Letters from A.A. Bartlett, brother-in-law of C. D. Rankin, to Cowe Morrison in Mull, inquire about family members and reminisces about a visit to the Morrison family on the Isle of Mull. A newspaper clipping from the "Prince Edward Island Times" dated the 23 April 1836, contains information communicated by the government of the day to the residents of PEI, in which C. D. Rankin is frequently mentioned.

Madge Smith fonds

This fonds consists of 11 photographs taken from the late Madge Smith's photo collection. The majority of these images are of the fishing industry and some are identified as being of the Rustico area, Prince Edward Island. One other identified photo is of Lieutenant-Governor Bradford William LePage inspecting the troops on Grafton St., Charlottetown. Three photographs are of Cavendish, including two of the "Green Gables" house and farm and one of a road in Cavendish possibly, the road leading from School Hill to Laird's Hill.

McLure's Store fonds

The fonds consists of one account book and four daybooks from McLure's Store in Murray River, Prince Edward Island. The account book covers the 1863-1864 period and denotes debts and credits. The daybooks give itemized accounts of daily purchases by residents of the community from 1869-1872 and 1875-1879.

This fonds consists of 18 photographs of three ships built by John A. MacDonald (1874-) of Tracadie, Prince Edward Island, in 1918-1920.

The first of the 3 MacDonald ships whose images have been captured in this collection is the "Anna MacDonald". She was built and launched in 1920 and was at least partially owned by John A. MacDonald. The "Anna MacDonald" weighed 183 tons.

Ship number 2, the "Barbara MacDonald" was owned solely by John A. MacDonald. She was built in 1919 by Duncan S. MacLaren and launched in that same year. The 162 ton schooner was wrecked on her maiden voyage, when she sank during a fierce storm off the coast of Newfoundland on December 14, 1919.

The final vessel, the "Victory Chimes" was built at Cardigan in 1918 by Kimble Coffin. She weighed 297 tons and was jointly owned by John A. MacDonald, George A. Thomson and Eleanor B. Lyons.

The fonds consists of a scrapbook compiled by Ella Bagnall Simpson. In her scrapbook Ella included newspaper clippings of marriages, deaths, anniversaries and social events with emphasis on the New Glasgow area as well as news on Island families living in the United States and New Zealand. There are also a few personal letters from nieces and nephews included in Ella's scrapbook.
