Series forms part of Nova Scotia Provinical Forest Practices Improvement Board fonds and consists of the chair's correspondence, memoranda and notes relating to the Forest Improvement Act. Series also includes drafts of the Act, correspondence and minutes relating to the Timber Loan Board, a booklet and drafts of guidelines for forest practices improvement and the texts of speeches. Correspondence is primarily from Hugh Fairn's tenure as chair and is with groups such as the Nova Scotia Wildlife Federation, Nova Scotia Forest Products Association, Nova Scotia Forestry Exhibition and Canadian Institute of Forestry. Series also includes correspondence and copies of briefs to the Royal Commission on Forestry. Some background material for the Forest Improvement Act (1965-1986) predates the creation of the board.

Series forms part of Nova Scotia Provinical Forest Practices Improvement Board fonds and consists of draft copies of The Trees Around Us: A Manual of Good Forest Practice for Nova Scotia, published in 1980. Series also includes agendas and minutes of meetings of the Manual Project Team, minutes of meetings of the editorial committee, the layout design for the manual, a copy of the contract with Timmerlinn Limited, papers and reports on wildlife, lists of recommended consultants, news clippings on forestry, a brief on the progress of the manual, a 1966 draft of "A Manual of Forest Practices for Nova Scotia", a tender for preparation of the manual, and some correspondence. The manual was prepared by Timmerlinn Limited on behalf of the Provincial Forest Practices Improvement Board in cooperation with the Canadian Department of Regional Economic Expansion and the Nova Scotia Department of Lands and Forests.

Series forms part of Nova Scotia Provinical Forest Practices Improvement Board fonds and consists of correspondence between district boards and the Nova Scotia Department of Lands and Forests relating to the Forest Improvement Act. Series also includes minutes of district and provincial board meetings, as well as memoranda, reports and correspondence relating to the amendment, proclamation and implementation of the Forest Improvement Act. There are also forest operators' certificates issued by the district boards, studies and reports on forest practices from within Nova Scotia and elsewhere, press clippings, correspondence of the secretary of the board, and some minutes, correspondence and budgets of the Timber Loan Board, which was administered under the Forest Improvement Act. The Forest Practices Improvement Board was chaired in its early years by the Minister of Lands and Forest, with department foresters acting as secretaries and advisers for the local boards. The boards received administrative support from the department, which is why many of the records in this series originate from the Nova Scotia Department of Lands and Forests.
