University of Washington photograph collection

The collection consists of photographs, copied from original images, held at the University of Washington. The collection represents the work of a number of photographers including: Asahel Curtis, E.O. Ellingsen, H.J. Goetzman, Larss & Duclos and Sarvant. The photographs came from three collections at the University of Washington: the Alaska and Yukon Miscellaneous Collection; the Yukon Miscellaneous Collection; and the Child Collection. The majority of the original photographs date from 1899-1901 although the time span of the collection is 1897-1922. Most of the images are of the Dawson City area, but a good portion focus on life along the creeks. Geographic locations include: Adams Hill, Bennett Lake, Bonanza Creek, Chilkoot Pass, Dawson City, Dominion Creek, Dyea Trail, Grand Forks, Miles Canyon and Whitehorse. Subjects represented include mines and mining, boat building, churches, roadhouses, sternwheelers, and sports. There are photographs of a number of individuals and images relating to the Canadian Development Company and the North West Mounted Police (NWMP).

The collection consists of copy prints of the Yukon from 1895 to 1948 taken by professional and amateur photographers such as E. A. Hegg, Larss & Duclos, Kinsey and Kinsey, F. N. Nowell, Anton Vogee, Cantwell, C. W. Faulkner, Darms, and Goetzman. Scenes include Dawson City streets, river front, businesses, residences, government buildings, and celebrations, miners and mining activities on Bonanza Creek, Eldorado, Dominion, Gold Run, and Last Chance Creeks, First Nations people and activities at New Rampart House (1913-1917), sternwheelers, Caribou Village, Bennett, Skagway and Yukon Order of Pioneers (YOOP).

S.S. Tutshi collection

The collection consists of six original log books from the sternwheeler S.S. Tutshi. These engine room log books, from the years 1932-1936 and 1940, contain data on trips, fuel consumption, etc.

W. Al Turner collection

The collection consists of 174 b&w copy negs and prints. In this collection are views of Dept. of Transport, Canadian Pacific Airlines (CPAir), and Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) personnel who were in Watson Lake, Yukon and area from 1943-1945. Various recreational activities are shown including dancing, skiing, playing musical instruments and partying. Many of the photographs of Watson Lake were taken by Don Speirs. Included are views of Watson Lake Airport Terminal Bldg., people of Watson Lake, riverboats, scenes along the White Pass and Yukon Route (WP&YR), views of Skagway, Alaska, the transfer of the Alaska Highway control from the American to Canadian Army, and from the Canadian Army to the Dept. of Public Works. Other images depict people, buildings, and social gatherings in Whitehorse, 1946-1948. There is also a 4-page type written letter sent by Mr. Turner to the Yukon Archives in 1988 recounting his recollections of life in Watson Lake and Whitehorse during the 1940s.

The collection consists of letters and a manuscript created or received by Turner. The letters are from J.B. Harkin, Commissioner of Canadian National Parks, acknowledging receipt of documentation from Turner regarding Robert Henderson. Copies of the documents are included. The manuscript describes the life of Robert Henderson, as he told it to Turner, ca. 1930.
