The ledger was used for several purposes between 1870 and 1887 which reflect some of the several roles William played in the community: farmer, school district trustee, and police magistrate. The ledger contains copies of minutes of meetings of Trenant School District trustees held in 1874, the earliest existing records for the Delta school district.

The fonds consists of a volume in which are recorded the accounts (1872-1904) of William Cartwright and the personal diary of daily activities (1882-1883) of Mary Cartwright. Volume also includes some poems and recipes. The original use of the volume appears to be the 1869 accounts of a general store, possibly the Horne Store. The accounts record many purchases by Chinese and Indians. Newsclippings (1913-1941) have been pasted over parts of the early 1869 accounts.
