Historic Summerside 1900-1970

  • CA PCNSWH MHCA0018
  • Collection
  • 2000-2002

This collection contains the materials accumulated by Fred Horne during his research and composition of the book "Historic Summerside 1900-1970". The City of Summerside, Prince Edward Island, honored the millennium year with the initiation of several projects relating to culture and heritage. In the spring of 2000 the Department of Economic Development issued a contract to PEI historian Fred Horne to write a history of Summerside that would describe the changes in the town in the 20th century. An advisory board consisting of Alan Rankin and Faye Pound met with the author over the summer and fall of 2000 and reviewed the early drafts of the book, which was to be called "An Illustrated History of Summerside". Nimbus Publishing Limited of Halifax was chosen as the publisher and it patterned the text and accompanying images to blend with its "Images of the Past" series. The editing process continued through 2001 after Mr. Horne had accepted a position as archivist at the MacNaught History Centre and Archives. The book went to press in early 2002 under the title "Historic Summerside 1900-1970" and was officially launched on Sunday, 9 June 2002.

The collection consists of Horne's handwritten notes made from printed sources and interviews, the typed records of the research plan, progress reports, book outlines and early book drafts, and some correspondence with Nimbus Publishing. The edited book drafts are stored on computer diskettes.

The book's emphasis is on photographs that were collected from Summerside individuals and institutions. The collection contains 751 digital images, over 100 of them from the collection of Donna Sears who inherited the historical photo collection from professional photographer Lorne Read. The Sears photographs are stored separately and contains 111 black and white prints made from negatives, of which 8 have not been scanned. The collection also contains a variety of printed materials that were collected by the author in the course of his work.

Schedule A. referred to in the annexed indenture... being a plan of the property of the late Joseph Green... indicating Portion No. 1 allotted to Gulielma Maria Green / drawn by Thos MacKinlay from Plan and Survey of A. Anderson, Esq.

  • CA PCNSWH MHCA0015
  • Collection
  • 1873

This single collected item consists of a certified copy of a property plan by Thomas MacKinlay showing locations of land in Summerside, Prince Edward Island, willed by Joseph Green to his daughter Gulielma Maria Green.

Joseph Green (1799-1869) of Summerside was the youngest son of Daniel Green, a United Empire Loyalist who settled on the edge of Bedeque Bay in an area to become known as Green's Shore and later as Summerside. When Daniel died in 1825, his estate of approximately 1000 acres was divided among his sons. Joseph received land between what is now Duke and Central Streets and raised his family on the original farm. He married Hannah Baker (1801-1850) with whom he had 9 children. After his death in 1869, the land was further divided and willed to his children including his third child Gulielma Maria Green (1833-1921). When Gulielma received the lots in 1873, she was a widow with three children, having married Asher Black in 1861. When she re-married in 1877, her new husband James A. Reid signed an agreement relinquishing any rights to her inherited property.

The original plan was drawn in 1872 to be annexed to a deed at the Registrar's Office. It was copied the following year and certified by T. Kelly, a local barrister, on 5 June 1873. The lands shown in the top section, on a scale of 100 feet to 1 inch, are town lots between Duke and Central Streets with the harbour to the south and Market St. North as the northern border. The lands shown in the bottom half, on a scale of 4 chains to 1 inch, are referred to as the "Rear Lands" and show land north of Market St. North with lots drawn on Central, Cedar and Duke Streets. Another small section of the plan, drawn also on a scale of 4 chains to 1 inch, shows land outside the town area, labelled as the W. William Farm. Portion No.1 being allotted to Gulielma is colour-coded in red. Four other colours were used to code lands for additional persons named in the will.

Holden C. Mills fonds

  • CA PCNSWH MHCA0014
  • Fonds
  • 1923-1944

The fonds consists of one item which is an account book titled "Day Book" He began making entries on Tuesday 1 May 1923 and continued until 26 December 1926. Presumably he became ill and someone else then recorded his personal and business transactions until 4 March 1927. There was a gap from that date until 6 April 1927 during which time Mr. Mills passed away. From April 1927 to the last entry in March 1944 there are financial recordings for his widow. Prior to that, Holden used the book for tracking personal expenditures for his home and automobile, donations to St. Mary's Church, purchases from local companies, wages for a domestic helper and an endowment to the building fund at King's College in Halifax, N.S. Other entries noted the results of local elections, planting of vegetable gardens, birthday dinners and the marriage in 1923 of his wife's niece Katherine Green and her untimely death in 1924 after baby Holden Taylor was born. In the autumns of 1923-26, H.C. Mills recorded his purchases of oysters and clams and the subsequent sale to numerous customers. His most important suppliers were Wallace Noye of Ellerslie and Russell Clark of Mount Stewart. He shipped most of the oysters to the Rideau Club in Ottawa, the York Club and the M. Doyle Fish Co. in Toronto, the Montreal Club in Montreal and J.H. Gingras in Quebec City. There are numerous entries for the Pavilion Silver Fox Co. regarding payments to rancher Joseph Arsenault, purchase of supplies and the sale of pelts and live animals.
