Hendricks family

This fonds consists of James Hendricks business correspondence, primarily about the shipping of hardware and general goods from Glasgow to Saint John. It also includes deeds, leases, bonds and other legal documentation assembled when James' son, Conrad, brought a suit in the Court of Equity in 1864 against Samuel Hallet over the administration of James' will. There are also some other papers belonging to Conrad's descendants.

The fonds consists of an extraction book and a letter. The extract book, dated 1793, belonged to Maria Ann Smart of Saint John. There is a note on the inside cover stating the book was a present from Miss Street. An index is included. This book contains handwritten copies of verse, prose, and hymns by various people, including friends.

The letter, dated 1804, is addressed to Elizabeth Smart, at Fredericton by her sister Frances Ager, living in Windsor, England. The letter describes her living quarters near Windsor Castle and discusses her husband's employment at the Castle. She writes of seeing Royalty pass by en route to St. George's Chapel. The letter also mentions the couple's two daughters, as well as relatives living in England.

The fonds consists of military commissions and muster rolls belonging to George Scovil. The military commissions are for George G.G. Scovil as ensign (1865) and captain (1866) of Company 8, Fourth Battalion, Kings County Militia. There are also two muster rolls. One belonged to Captain G.G. Scovil, of Company 8, Fourth Battalion, Kings County Militia (1866) and contains names, ages, marital status and active or sedentary status of the members of the company.

The other muster roll, for the same company, originally belonged to a Captain W.B. Scovil, Company 8, Fourth Battalion, King's County Militia and contains names, ages, marital status and active or sedentary status.

Fonds consists of bylaws and a scrapbook. The by-laws provide information about the structure of this organization. The scrapbook is dated 1932 and contains a few newsclippings and a letter about the 1932 Dahlia Show at the Saint John Exhibition. This fonds consists of the records of the Board of Health. Correspondence consists of letters pertaining to health matters such as milk and water testing, government regulations, and citizen inquiries. Ephemera includes a brochure commemorating the Board of Health centennial, 1855-1955; provincial regulations for hotels (1918), the duties of officers in health districts and sub districts (1928) and copy of a bill to amend the Health Act.

There is a report to the housing commission with recommendations. The petition addressed to the chairman and members of the Board of Health concerns the Carritte Fertilizer Manufacturing Plant located on the Red Head Road and the offensive odour emanating from it. Legal documents include agreements for services and leases.

The fonds includes a circular letter about the St. George's Day celebrations of 1896 with a list of scheduled activities. There is an invitation to Mr. And Mrs. H.C. Lord to a dance; a St. George's Society Toast List of 1941; 2 programmes dated 1956 and 1959 and a song sheet. Also included is a letter of acknowledgement from Clementine Churchill for the messages of condolence sent by the Society on the death of Winston Churchill in 1965.

William J. Ritchie letters

The fonds consists of typed transcriptions of letters written by Ritchie to his mother while serving in the South Africa (Boer) War. The letters are dated 17 January 1900, 22 February 1900, and 28 February 1900 written from Belmont and Paardeberg Drift, South Africa. Letters describe William Ritchie's experience fighting the Boers in graphic detail and give information about the everyday life of a soldier in the Boer War. The letter dated 22 February vividly describes a charge on the Boers during which he received a superficial wound from shrapnel while under fire from 5 different points. Included in the letters are a few references to letters received from family members in Canada, receiving copies of Saint John newspapers and his comments about city councillors.

The certificates include James Pringle's discharge from the South African War in 1900 and his service certificate from the First World War. There are mentions in two dispatches, issued by the War Office in London, for gallant and distinguished services in the field, dated 7 November 1917 and 7 April 1918.
