Moose Island garrison

This fonds consists of contemporary copies of letters to Captain R. Gibbon and Sgt. Peter Crook of the British garrison from the citizens of Eastport, Maine in 1818 and their replies. The correspondence discusses the return of Moose Island to the United States. It gives details of the handing-over ceremony and expresses the high esteem of the citizens for the conduct of Capt. Gibbon and his men toward them.

Mackenzie family fonds

Fonds constituted of ca. 300 photographs and ca. 100 postcards of military and WWI scenes, Donald and Addison Mackenzie’s political careers, and many of the Mackenzie family members. Also included is correspondence (1819-2002); drawings of the Dalziel barn; school textbooks and essays; published books; programs and papers from the York Historical Pioneer Society, the Horticultural Society, and the Conservation Society; tax notices and assessments; insurance forms; bills and receipts; and newspaper clippings. Mementos from the family’s pilgrimage to Vimy Ridge in 1936 include programs, a remembrance book, pilgrim lists, and a diary written by Major Mackenzie with accompanying transcript. Items from Donald and Major Mackenzie’s political careers include speeches, briefs, acts, Woodbridge Village Council agendas and minutes, election ballets and posters, and electoral boundary maps. Of particular interest is a WWI trench map from 1916 sent by Major Mackenzie to his family. Also A.A. Mackenzie's pre 1901 Victorian officer's infantry sword (used as a dress sword rather than in battle).

This fonds consists of a letter book containing copies of John Harvey's confidential letters to Lord Durham during the period that Durham was Governor General of British North America (29 May to 29 September 1838). Harvey discusses the need for reform, supports Durham's actions and discusses the Maine boundary issue.

The fonds consists of military commissions and muster rolls belonging to George Scovil. The military commissions are for George G.G. Scovil as ensign (1865) and captain (1866) of Company 8, Fourth Battalion, Kings County Militia. There are also two muster rolls. One belonged to Captain G.G. Scovil, of Company 8, Fourth Battalion, Kings County Militia (1866) and contains names, ages, marital status and active or sedentary status of the members of the company.

The other muster roll, for the same company, originally belonged to a Captain W.B. Scovil, Company 8, Fourth Battalion, King's County Militia and contains names, ages, marital status and active or sedentary status.

Fonds consists of family records and genealogical material. There is a marriage certificate for Daniel Valentine and Lucinda Sloan, Daniel Valentine's discharge certificate and 3 baptismal certificates for their children Mary Ann, William and Lucinda. A letter, dated February 1886, from the Royal Hospital in London, England discusses Daniel Valentine's pension. Daniel Valentine's account book, 1854-1871, includes details of his monthly salary, clothing allotment, and savings bank account.

The genealogical notes are poorly arranged and badly written and include the marriage notice of Frank Valentine of Bonny River, New Brunswick to Lilla Hanson Miles of East Lowell, Maine, United States of America in 1890. Other information pertains to Lucinda Sloan Valentine's family, and includes names of parents, and siblings as well as names of her maternal grandmother's family, including Catherine Lavery and Jane Jones.
