City Clerk's Office Conflict of Interest Book

Subseries consists of a book kept by the City Clerk of Conflicts of Interest declared at Dartmouth City Council sessions, regular, committee of the whole and In-Camera, as well as at meetings of Boards and Committees. An Act to Prevent Conflict of Interest in the Conduct of Municipal Government (Bill 91), passed in 1982, required this record-keeping (section 7.3). A copy of the Act is in the first file.<p> The book includes a chronological index at the front of each file, then a page explaining the details of the Conflict of Interest, including Alderman involved, date of meeting, and an explanation of the conflict. Some descriptions also have copies of newsclippings about the conflict.

Dartmouth (N.S.). City Clerk-Treasurer's Budget files

Capital and Operating budget files which the Clerk-Treasurer's office accumulated in their role supporting the City Administrator in the prepartion of the budget each year. The files include correspondence, summaries of departmental activities and functions, and financial records.

Dartmouth (N.S.). City Clerk-Treasurer's By-law correspondence

Subseries consists of correspondence between the City Clerk-Treasurer, the City Solicitor, and other City departments, regarding the implementation and interpretation of City by-laws. The files contain research done while by-laws were being drafted, and interpretation of how different departments would be affected. Files include records related to by-laws such as the 1985 Sunday Permits By-law (C-556), and research into amending animal welfare and licensing by-laws in 1993. Records also contain references to repealed by-laws and those that replaced them.

Dartmouth (N.S.). City Clerk-Treasurer's Government Bills correspondence

Subseries consists of correspondence regarding the implementation and interpretation of provincial bills affecting the City of Dartmouth. Files include records pertaining to such provincial bills as <i>An Act to Incorporate the Nova Scotia Housing Development Corporation</i> (1986, Bill 8), which would have affected the Dartmouth Housing Authority and could have affected property tax revenue for the City. Files also include discussion of the 1993 amendments to the <i>Public Sector Compensation Act</i> (Bill 52), and other bills affecting municipal government operations.

Dartmouth (N.S.). City Clerk-Treasurer's correspondence

Subseries consists of incoming correspondence to the City Clerk-Treasurer. Sub-series includes budgets, minutes, reports, newsletters and other correspondence from the Metropolitan Authority, the Dartmouth Housing Authority, Halifax-Dartmouth Bridge Commission, Halifax-Dartmouth Port Commission, and the Metropolitan Transit Commission.

Dartmouth (N.S.). Corporate Services Ongoing Subject Files

Subseries consists of subject files kept by Corporate Services, the department created in 1994 merging the City Clerk-Treasurer's Office with Purchasing and Stores. In contrast to the yearly subject files kept by the office which related to annual activities such as budget preparation, taxation and purchases, these ongoing subject files reflect procedural and policy development and implementation and other issues wich were not contained to one calendar year. Many of the files contain records relating to planning for the municipal amalgamation which happened in 1996.

Town of Dartmouth correspondence

Subseries consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence from Dartmouth's Town Clerk and Town Council. Among the correspondence are petitions to the federal government regarding railway construction, and a ceremonial greeting from the town of Canterbury.

Dartmouth event photographs

Subseries consists of photographs of Dartmouth City Council and staff, as well as special Dartmouth events, including the 1959 Royal Visit, the Alderney Gate sod turning ceremony, and visits of foreign investors.

Acts of the Nova Scotia Legislature Related to Dartmouth

Subseries consists of two volumes of legislation relevant to the early operation of the Town of Dartmouth.
The first is bound volume of provincial legislation relevant to the Town of Dartmouth or any NS municipality, and the town's by-laws and ordinances. This volume was maintained by the Town Clerk and so has markings and additions as legislation was amended. <p> Among the contents are: <br>An Act to Incorporate the Town of Dartmouth - 1873 and 1886<br> Police Regulations - 1882 and 1887. <br>the Annual Report of the Warden and Auditors of the Town of Dartmouth - 1886.
The second is a scrapbook with pages from the Nova Scotia statutes 1902-1920, pasted into it. The book contains acts governing the Town of Dartmouth, and has been annotated by the Town Clerk-Treasurer's Office to show amendments.
