  • CA PCA Acc2960
  • Collection
  • [ca. 1864]

This fonds consists of one photograph of the St. Eleanor's jail and courthouse, ca. 1864.

In 1833, George Tanton was given the contract for the construction of a 3 story wooden structure to serve as the St. Eleanor's jail and courthouse. Twice annually (the first Tuesdays in June and October) a judge would travel from Charlottetown to St. Eleanor's to hold court sessions. These sessions lasted seven days. Open oral elections also took place here and often became very rough affairs. After the construction of a new jail and courthouse in Summerside in 1876, the St. Eleanor's structure was torn down, despite a petition that the establishment be appropriated to the community.

Lowell Hancock photograph collection

  • CA PCA Acc2969
  • Collection
  • 1925-1965

This collection consists of 305 photographs relating to the fax farming industry on Prince Edward Island. Begun in the late nineteenth century by Charles Dalton and Robert Oulton, the fox farming industry grew steadily on the Island and spread to the other provinces, the United States, Europe and the world. The industry on P.E.I. reached its peak in the two decades between 1910 and 1930 and remained steady enough to see many farmers through the depression of the thirties. By the end of the decade however, a downward trend had become evident and the end of the Second World War spelled the beginning to the end of fox farming although there was a brief upsurge in the late sixties and seventies. The majority of images are of foxes (both live and pelts). Also captured are fox farms, fox shows and some individuals related to the business.

School District Heritage: An Oral History Collection

  • CA PCA Acc2970
  • Collection
  • [ca. 1977]

This collection consists of over sixty hours of tape recorded interviews with fifty-six school teachers most of whom taught in one room school houses in Prince Edward Island for at least one year and many of whom taught for several or most of their teaching years in these small schools. The information recorded is that of the experience of teaching and living in the small communities of PEI, primarily during the 1920's and early 1930's. Only a very little information pertaining to the extreme east and west parts of the Island was collected as the majority of the teachers readily available for interviews had taught most of their lives in the Queens County area.

A tape outline denoting subjects discussed and location of same on the tape accompanies each tape. A subject index indicating number, names and locations of discussions on the several topics is also provided. A second index lists under the name of the teacher the principal subjects appearing in the interview. Among the tape outline folders are three or four interview outlines for which there is no tape as none was made at the request of the interviewee usually. In addition to the tape outline folders there are six verbatim transcripts. This course was not pursued because of time limitations.

There is one tape, that of Mrs. Marion Lea (Judson) MacCallum, which is not interfiled with the mainstream of the collection as it was made at a later date; rather, it is located as an addition to the collection.
