Mary Spurr Harding genealogical

The collection consists of genealogical information and family letters. There are original letters with transcriptions, written by Mary Spurr Harding from Shippegan and Chatham, N.B., in 1851-1852, to her mother Amelia deWolf Spurr in Bridgetown, Nova Scotia. The letters discuss: children; childhood conditions, including remedies for worms; mid-19th century everyday life for women; relatives; preserving food, particularly fruit; family friends; travel within the province; and the slow delivery of mail. There is also some discussion of Mary Harding's husband John's lumber and shipping business.

There is also a modern hand-drawn map showing the places in northern New Brunswick and Nova Scotia where Spurr and Harding families lived; photocopies of photographs of Mary Harding (1850 -1901); newsclippings of family obituaries; a photograph of the Harding house in Miramichi; and genealogical material including a printed form showing Spurr family lineage.

This fonds consists of the financial records of the lumber business including journals, ledgers, letter books, daybooks and a workmen's time book, 1856.

Also included are the receiving and delivering books (Carleton Pond), 1863-1865; surveying books, hewing books, and a record book containing specifications of cargo shipped, 1872. There are also scow journals, 1859-1863 and scow day books, 1901, 1904-1905.

This collection consists of family and business records belonging to the Hilyards and related families. The business records of Thomas Hilyard and, after 1873, Hilyard Brothers include lumbering agreements, invoices, accounts, mortgages, deeds, shipbuilding agreements and a volume with shipping accounts, lists of vessels built and voyages made. There are also journals, day books and other accounting records of Thomas Hilyard and Hilyard Bros, a record of lumber sawn at Hilyard Bros., payroll and time books Material belonging to the Seeley family includes records about the ship "Australasian", bonds, agreements, deeds, invoices and receipts to Alexander McLachlan Seely from Saint John businesses, insurance documents, accounts and personal correspondence. There is also information about the Acadia College Endowment Fund and Leinster Street Baptist Church and an account book of Spring Dale Paper Mill, 1877.

There are also records relating to the Saint John harbour issue, 1885-1914, and documents about the ship "Magna Charta", 1865-1884. Invoices, accounts, workmen's accounts and other material belonging to the related McDonald and Roberts families are also included. There is an abstract book of surveyors' summaries of lumber transported by scow, 1897-1900, and a letter book of F.W. Holt (Saint John civil engineer), 1909-1913.

This fond consists of the business records of Erlon Bell and his son, Samuel W. Bell. It includes correspondence, account books, day books, ledgers, cashbooks, accounts receivable, time books, wage books, journals, payroll record cards, year-end statements, vouchers, and invoices. Also included are workers group insurance records, workmen's compensation records, legal records, and information relating to cutting and scaling.

There are also materials related to a number of companies, including North Carleton Land Co. (1965-1967), Carleton Development Co. Ltd., Monquart Lumber Co. Ltd., Woodstock Woodworking Factory Ltd., Lockhart Woodworking Limited, Flemming Industries Ltd., Flemming & Gibson Ltd., Dead River-Merican Industries Ltd. A few personal records of both Erlon Bell and Samuel Bell (correspondence, bills, school trustee papers, school books, photographs) are also included.

Waterloo (ship)

This fonds documents the timber trading activities of the ship "Waterloo" as transacted by its owners John Ward & Sons, of Saint John and their agents, between 1821 and 1826. It consists of a disbursment book that records the purchase of provisons and the hiring of labour for 10 timber voyages. Items and services purchased include foodstuffs, household supplies, insurance, rum, paint, oil, medical attendances, clothing, cartage, surveying, hauling and custom duties. For the most part, the names of the captains and seamen receiving wages, the amounts paid, and the type of labour performed are recorded. Occasionally expenses paid on the seamen's behalf, such as washing, tobacco, and rum are noted. Statements of sales of timber and cargo at Liverpool, statements of profit and loss, and accounts of cargos are also included.

A number of newspaper clippings, [ca. 1885], on a variety of subjects, such as shipping, steamboats, railways, bridges, politics, crime, and charitable organizations, relating primarily to the city of Saint John, were found tucked between the pages of the disbursement book. This material is also included with the fonds.
