R.S. Chilton collection

  • CA yuk yuk-216
  • Collection
  • Copied before 1982 (originally created 1899)

The collection consists of photocopies of two handwritten letters and a typewritten "Receipt for Fares" sent to R.S. Chilton by J.C. McCook, U.S. Consul representative in Dawson City, in 1899. The letters describe the libel suit McCook was bringing against the "Dawson Nugget" newspaper (because of an attack on McCook's character) and his request that the Consul Department support his innocence by keeping him in their employ. The "Receipt of Fares" was sent as an example of how poorly McCook's typewriter worked, to justify sending handwritten letters.
