Fonds consists of records created or accumulated by the Halifax Particular Council of the Society of St. Vincent De Paul. Includes an almost complete set of printed annual reports,1876-1999, two original minute books, 1872-1919, printed manuals and rule books, a scrapbook compiled by member Jack Leydon with clippings and articles on the history of the Halifax Council, and a videocassette depicting the local activities of the Halifax Council, 1981.The printed reports include not only annual reports but also treasurer's financial statements, records of charitable work accomplished, and lists of subscriptions and donations.

records created and accumulated by Cyrus D. Sampson in his role as investigator with the Moose River Rescue Fund Committee. Includes a notebook containing minutes of meetings, notes, and drafts of letters, lists of miners, sworn personal statements from miners and rescue workers, correspondence between Sampson and fund administrators and government officials, and Sampson's own statements and reports on the rescue effort, in which he emphasized the role Westville miners played -- a role which had been largely ignored by the media.

Black United Front fonds

operational records created or accumulated by the Black United Front. Includes records of the Provincial Council, 1970-1995, Board of Directors, 1969-1979, and Executive Director's Office, 1970-1996. The Provincial Council was the supreme authority of BUF and was the forum through which elected community representatives met and formulated policy and strategies. It had its own slate of officers, by-laws and committees. Its records consist of minutes of high-level meetings, correspondence (chiefly of the president), policy and procedural manuals, constitutions and by-laws, memoranda of association and incorporation documents. The Board of Directors was the policy refining branch, accountable to the Provincial Council. It consisted of councillors and the executive director. It ceased to exist in 1981. Its records consist of meeting minutes files, which also include supporting documentation such as correspondence, notes, reports, and submissions. The executive director, who was hired in 1970, carried out the policies, procedures and programs of the Provincial Council and managed staff. Other duties included preparation of submissions and reports on areas of research. Includes correspondence (arranged chronologically), annual and quarterly progress reports to the council, commissioned surveys, studies and reports and case files. The latter include on-going projects, investigations, fund-raising ideas, exchanges of information, policy and strategy with other organizations, and contacts with government departments and individuals, and are arranged alphabetically. There are also audited financial statements, correspondence and progress reports of outreach and field staff, community workers and the human services workers, and several in-house publications such as newsletters, newspapers and promotional brochures. Also includes a set of u-matic videocassettes containing episodes of BUF's "Black Horizons" cable tv show, which ran from 1976-1983.

Perry Borden fonds

Fonds consists of a ledger used by Perry Borden and subsequently by other members of the Borden family to record accounts held with other individuals. The contents of the fonds indicate that the ledger was kept in the family subsequent to Perry's death. The contents include an alphabetical index, accounting entries, and some poetry in the middle of the volume that does not appear to be in Mr. Borden's handwriting. Approximately three quarters of the ledger is used to record information.

material created and accumulated by Janet Kitz in preparation for the publcation of her books on the Halifax Harbour Explosion of 1917. Includes photographs by Gauvin and Gentzell of the north end of Halifax after the explosion, as well as research material relating to survivors of the explosion. The research materials consist of tape recorded interviews of survivors of the event, interview transcripts and photographs and slides of those who were interviewed.

J.A.D. McCurdy fonds

Fonds consists of documents which relate to J.A.D. McCurdy's involvement with the history of aviation and aircraft production in Canada as well as his term as the Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia. The contents of the fonds include photographs of family and friends as well as formal portraits of Mr. McCurdy and images of Government House after a major renovation that took place circa 1947-1948. Fonds also includes speeches and addresses that he gave along with personal, family and health correspondence, and programs, honours and awards that he received, many of which related to the fiftieth anniversary of the flight of the Silver Dart. Also includes a scrapbook received or compiled by the McCurdys during their tenure as the Vice-Regal couple. The fonds also includes pastel portraits of the McCurdys. Mrs. McCurdy sat for Nova Scotian artist Margaret Fulton Frame while J.A.D. McCurdy sat for Nicolas de Grandmaison.

Albert Pearl and Mather Byles Pearl fonds

Fonds consists of five diaries kept by the Pearls in their capacity as lighthouse keepers for the Department of Marine, Canada - Lighthouse Service. The contents of the fonds record times when the lights were lit, extinguished and the total time in operation for the lighthouse on Green Island (subsequently Pearl Island), Nova Scotia, at the mouth of St. Margarets Bay. The diaries also include observations about the weather and winds.
