Grand Manan education

This collection consists of records and information about education on Grand Manan Island collected from various sources. The administrative records include correspondence about the construction of the Grand Manan Regional High School, school board minutes, handbooks and financial statements.

Staff and student records include yearly reports on students and staff, retirement notices, prize lists and information about students who went on to post-secondary education. Copies of school publications--namely, School Post, Chatterbox, Mananooc News, and GMHS Review--are also included. Other printed materials include copies of the Education Act & Regulations, 1950-1963, press clippings and programmes from the official opening of the high school, the music festival and other events.

There are also records of the Grand Manan Teachers Association and the Home and School Association.

Included are:

  • Reports of Committee Chairman of NBFHSAL presented at the AGM May 1961 and 1962 and the minutes of the same meetings.
  • Grand Harbour Home and School Association first minute book, 2 November 1938 - May 1943.
  • Board of School Trustees of Grand Manan Regional School District minute book, 24 June 1949 - 23 May 1960; and a second minute book for 13 June 1960 - 12 June 1967. (Note: 12 June 1967 was their final meeting.)

J.E. Humphreys historical

The fonds consists of historical and biographical notes and manuscripts, correspondence, and printed material. The notes focus on the early history and settlers in Westmorland and Albert counties. There are biographical notes of the first English speaking settlers in Salisbury parish, including the Babcock, Beck, Blakeney, Eagles, Chapman, and other families.

Humphreys' correspondence with W. F. Ganong, 1927-1928, and 1929-1936, primarily discusses nomenclature of places in New Brunswick, mostly Westmorland and Albert Counties. There is an unpublished manuscript of ""History of the Petitcodiac"" by J.E. Humphreys which includes an index of major topics. A copy of an unfinished manuscript titled, "The History of Albert County" by W.C. Milner is included along with the author's notes. This work was published by the New Brunswick Museum in 1989.

There are also some publications written by W.F. Ganong, 1900-1928, dealing with the nomenclature of places and the origins of the boundaries of New Brunswick.

This fonds consists of correspondence and other material assembled by the MacBeath family. It includes a letterbook of Allan MacBeath, 1857-1858; class lists of Victoria and Centennial schools (Saint John) kept by Edith MacBeath, 1888-1926; correspondence, notes and other material of T. Allan MacBeath and certificates and other material of MacBeath family.

Material created by other individuals and collected by MacBeath family includes a scrapbook kept by E.T.C. Knowles, 1870's; correspondence, deeds and other material related to the Botsford, Allan, Cornwall, McPherson, Millidge and Stephen families and a daybook of freight charges kept by Mr. Jones (general merchant, Petitcodiac Bend, Moncton) 1845-1847.

There is also a biographical note, dated 19 May 1906, including date of death, age at death, birth place, positions held, and notes about Henry Thomas.

Botsford family

This collection consists of Botsford family records donated by 4 different donors. Records relating to Amos Botsford include accounts payable, land records and records of annuities belonging to Deborah Murray. A list of the Loyalist settlement in the Annapolis/Digby area, Nova Scotia includes equipment and tools received from Amos Botsford and names of families. There are also complaints about Amos Botsford's handling of Loyalist claims.

Records relating to William Botsford include his receipt book, 1801-1829, for legal services rendered and testimonials and recommendations written for individuals including one for immigration purposes. There is also a copy of a warrant re William Botsford's salary as assistant judge. Documents pertaining to the Supreme Court case of Robert Crookshank and William Walker v. J. White, George Nowlan, and George Ketchum probably also belonged to William.

There are certificates and other personal papers belonging to Garrad Clopper, Harry G. Botsford of Boston, LeBaron Botsford and Sarah Cyper. Family and business correspondence, 1782-1913. Deeds for Botsford family property from 1797 to 1837 are also included.

There are also ephemeral items including Valentine's Day and other cards, and a printed poem by Maud Botsford entitled, "Our Boys," probably from the First World War. The apprenticeship indenture of Frederick Turner as a clerk and writer to Henry George Clopper of Wakefield, York, Co. N.B. is dated 1827.

There are family and legal papers relating to the Clopper, Murray and Ralph Cook estates. A plan of the Clopper farm in Fredericton is also included.

This fonds consists of historical correspondence, reports, acts, agreements and other material about New Brunswick railways. There are monthly payrolls of Salisbury and Harvey Railway, 1898-1901; accounts of the Albert Railway, 1877-1882; cancelled cheques and promissory notes of the N.B. Railway Co., 1884-1887; and records of the Northern and Western Railway Co., Railway Extension Co., and Cumberland Railway and Coal Co. The collection includes timetables, correspondence, lists of locomotives, notes, notices, newsletters and copies of newspaper articles.

Gilbert family genealogy

The fonds consists of genealogical research material about the Gilbert and allied families history from the mid-16th century onwards. It includes George Gilbert's correspondence with family members about the family history and a manuscript copy of "The Gilberts of New England," which was edited by Geoffrey Gilbert of Victoria, British Columbia and published in 1959.

There are also Gilbert family estate papers, 1826 -1924, dealing with the estates of Elizabeth Gilbert Wilson, Bradford Gilbert and Henry Gilbert.
