Art Johnson fonds

The fonds consists of 23 original b&w photographs which deal primarily with the building of the airport runway in Watson Lake, Yukon in 1942. Images include the runway under construction, the radio shack, a U.S. Army road crew, a float plane on Watson Lake, and an Army camp on the shore of the lake.

The fonds consists of the donor's research files on 138 sternwheelers in Alaska and the Yukon, ca. 1900-1953. The files include information about where each vessel was built, rivers it operated on, and the dates of operation.

The fonds consists of eighteen 16 mm film reels, 109 black and white photographs and 9 colour slides. The film reels contain footage of several northern communities: Dawson City, Whitehorse, Fairbanks, Eagle, Palmer and Bear Creek. There are scenes of activities such as river ice breaking up, flooding of Dawson City, construction of North Fork Power Plant, U.S. smelting operations on Cripple Creek near Fairbanks, steamers, Discovery Day Parade, airplanes, dredges and mining activity, and the White Pass and Yukon Route (WP&YR) railway. Many of these were taken while the Daily family was on vacation in the United States.

The fonds consists of photographs taken by Arthur L. Wilson and includes views of the sternwheelers Tanana, Casca, Clifford Sifton and Scotia; Whitehorse and the shipyards; Whitehorse Rapids on the Yukon River; several unidentified people; and a 1910 photograph of a pack train taken by J. Doody. Also included is a newspaper clipping announcing the marriage of Margaret M. Brethour to Mr. Wilson.

The fonds consists of 24 reel-to-reel sound recordings. The first recording is Mrs. Retallack's description of her collection at the time she donated the sound recordings to the Yukon Archives. It includes interviews in the 1960s and early 1970s with various Dawson City pioneers (people who came to the Yukon before and after the Klondike Gold Rush). People interviewed include Mrs. Harry McDonnell, Chester Henderson (son of Robert Henderson), Johnny Drabeson, Joe Langevin, John Korbo, Elizabeth Vifquin, Louis Cardinal, Dick Gillespie, Johnny Hoggan, Alan Innes-Taylor, Alec Adams, A.Y. Jackson, Bert Lahr, Bea Lilly and Rev. Richard Martin and several others. Subjects discussed include the use of steamboats on the Yukon River, early transportation in the Yukon, and entertainment and theatre. Some of the interviews took place during "walks" in both Dawson City and Whitehorse and at particular events.

The fonds consists of original textual records containing newspaper clippings, programs, a menu, invitations, correspondence and personal notes pertaining to the construction of the Alaska Highway in the Yukon, ca. 1942-1980. The fonds also contains original photographs of the opening ceremonies of the Alaska Highway, 1942.

Back and Bee family fonds

The fonds consists of photographs taken from the Back and Bee family photograph albums by Austin Bee in 1989, and prints made of slides taken by Austin Bee on a return visit to the Yukon in 1963. The photographs album contained shots of the families' lives in the Carmacks area. Most of the photographs were taken by Lois Back Bee who was an amateur photographer and did her own developing and printing. Ida May Back and Austin Bee took some of the photographs. The fonds also includes letters written by Austin Bee in 1989 and 1990, to Yukon Archives and Pelly River Historical Society detailing his family's history in the Yukon. The prints of the slides from 1963 show Carmacks buildings, including the Goulter's cabin, the Post Office, the Carmacks Roadhouse, the diesel electric generating plant, the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) building, Carmacks Hotel, Tom Bee's Trading Post, Howard and Alice McMillan's residence, the Carmacks school under construction, and Carmacks residents, Fritz Guder, Frank and Ida May Goulter, Bill Langham, and the postmistress, as well as Austin's travelling companion Colonel Frank Noyes. There are also views from the Mount Freegold area, Seymour Creek and the Nordenskiold River.

The fonds consists of photographs of the construction of the Whitehorse Dam, a tourist information booth at Whitehorse, Yukon, Dawson City and Whitehorse scenes, the last voyage of the sternwheeler S.S. Keno, Rendezvous or Discovery Days, the Catholic Mission at Burwash Landing, Pelly River barge, Montague Roadhouse, the last ferry at Carmacks, a graveyard and other views from about 1957-1965. Also included in the fonds is a copy of the last photograph taken of Will Rogers and Wiley Post, images of Canadian Pacific Airlines staff houses, Miles Canyon, and the store and dormitory at Engineer Mine.
