Ferne (Mills) Crosby collection

  • CA PCA Acc4307
  • Collection
  • Copied 1993

The collection consists of two copy prints of images of Crosby's Mill. Crosby's Mill was one of many independent small mills which operated in Prince Edward Island in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It was in existence at Bonshaw as early as 1841, owned and operated by Andrew C. Crosby. The complex included at various times carding, shingle, saw, and grist mills. For a brief period of time it was even used to generate electricity for a few surrounding residences. One of the copy prints was copied from a photograph taken circa 1890. The other was a photograph taken of a watercolour painting of the Mill in 1917 by C. M. Seaman.

Murray River, mileage 43.64, Murray Harbour Sub-division, Canadian National Railways

  • CA PCA Acc4312
  • Collection
  • Copied 1993

This collection consists of a plan of Murray River south of the river showing the line and property of the railway. The plan also includes names of other property owners and locations of various buildings and businesses.

In April 1871, the Prince Edward Island Legislature approved the Railroad Construction Bill which authorized construction of a railroad throughout the Island. The financial burden of such an undertaking was one of the major considerations for joining Confederation two years later. Somewhat erratic service was provided by the contractors until the railroad was turned over to Thomas Swinyard, Dominion Government Commissioner in December 1874. Trains running according to an established timetable began in April 1875 from Charlottetown to Summerside, Georgetown, and Souris return and from Summerside to Tignish. The branch line to Murray Harbour and intermediate stations was apparently laid around the turn of the century although rail connection with Charlottetown was not established until the Hillsborough Bridge was completed late in 1905. The line was resurveyed in 1915.

The Women's Secretariat of Prince Edward Island was the body responsible for organizing the photo session.

Elmer Phillips fonds

  • CA PCA Acc4585
  • Collection
  • 1986-1993

The collection consists of two large binders of colour photographs (ca. 400) of the cemeteries and the individual headstones of Islanders who died overseas in the second world war. One binder is dedicated to the cemeteries in Italy while the other contains images from cemeteries in Belgium, France, Germany, and Holland. They are arranged by cemetery and are often preceded by a ground plan of the cemetery and the names of the Islanders who are buried there. The list occasionally contains a place of residence in PEI and/or the unit the soldier served with. There are also ca 800 identified negatives of the cemeteries and headstones which appear in the binders as well as many other cemeteries, including some in Great Britain. A few are of graves of soldiers in World War I and some are for graves of non-Islanders. Not all images which appear in the binders have corresponding negatives. Negative numbers appear on the verso of photos for which there are corresponding negatives. Similarly, negatives for which imagines appear in the binders are identified in the index to the graves. The fonds also contains a few textual items concerning errors in the "Island magazine" article, casualties, cemeteries in Normandy and the graves of war dead in Prince Edward Island.
