English parish records collection

The Maritime History Archive commenced the collection of English parish records during the period 1973-1980. The parish records document the genealogical origins of Newfoundland families whose ancestors had emigrated from England before the twentieth century.

Collection consists of microfilmed copies of records of many parishes in the south West of England, particularly in the counties of Devon, Dorset, Somerset and Hampshire. The collection focuses on those areas which supplied crews for the Newfoundland fishery and the places of origin of Newfoundland settlers. Devon parishes predominate. The collection is indexed by parish.

Collection consists of microfilmed account books of William Pickering that document the voyages of his two fishing sloops, Speedwell and Content, as well as his dealings with mariners, fishermen, and the tradesmen of Salem's waterfront. The collection also includes a description of the peddling activities of the brigantine Hope in fishing settlements from Ferryland to Bonavista, Newfoundland.

Panama maps collection

The collection consists of three maps: 1) Hacke's “Draft of the Golden & adjacent islands with part of ye Isthmus of Darien as it was taken by Captain Ienefer where ye Scots West-India Company setteled” plus Hacke & Morden's “New Map of Ye Isthmus of Darien in America”; 2) “A Map of Part of the Isthmus of Darien, shewing the communication with Panama, from Portobello & Chagre both by land, and by water”; 3) “Rade du Darien et les Isles Voisines”. Maps 1 and 3 relate to the Darién scheme, an attempt by Scotland to establish a colony called 'New Caledonia' on the Isthmus of Panama at the end of the 17th century (1698-1699). It was poorly managed and many colonists succumbed to disease. It was abandoned after a siege by Spanish forces in April 1700.

Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts

This collection consists of a detailed calendar of correspondence between clergy in New Brunswick and the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel in Foreign Parts in London, 1821-1848. Most of the letters are written from New Brunswick, with a few replies from London. There is also a calendar of the letters from Archdeacon George Coster of Fredericton, 1829-1844. Both calendars include an index of the names appearing, biographical notes on the writers of the letters, and abstracts of the letters.

There are also 56 reels of microfilm containing other records related to New Brunswick, acquired from the Society, including an index, journals (1747-1860), and calendars (1702-1885)

Ontario History collection

The collection consists mainly of items relating to the history of Ontario with some items relating to other parts of Canada and the U.S. covering the period 1716 to 1950. These were items which accumulated in the office of Ontario History and which were passed to the University of Waterloo. The contents include correspondence, manuscripts, typescripts, documents, pamphlets, clippings, ephemera, maps, photographs and engravings. Most of the typescripts are transcriptions of petitions to the Government of Upper Canada for grants of land. The topical and chronological coverage of this collection is wide-ranging.
