Toronto General Hospital School of Nursing sous-fonds

Sous-fonds consists of applications for admission; student records; Director’s reports and correspondence; registers, day books and procedures manuals; materials relating to the Student Nurses’ Association and to ceremonies and special events connected with the School; education program files and photographs created and maintained by the TGH School of Nursing and subsequently maintained by the TTH Nursing Education and Research Department. Registers

Series consists of registers maintained for various purposes. File 1.1.5.1 is a register of graduates of the School 1881-1918, including students’ names and year of graduation. File 1.1.5.2 is a register of graduates of the School 1883-1940, including maiden and married names, whether deceased, and year of graduation. Files 1.1.5.3 and 1.1.5.4 are registers of student grades 1898-1920 and 1920-1935, including students’ and examiners’ names; date; course name; grade. File 1.1.5.5 is a register of students’ attendance 1927-1936. Files 1.1.5.6 and 1.1.5.7 are registers of probationary students 1913-1925 and 1926-1943, including students’ names, age, address; dates of probationary and full admission to the School; notes on students’ health, character, academic performance and potential. Files 1.1.5.8 and 1.1.5.9 are registers 1948-1958 and 1958-1970 documenting use of the School seal, including date, description of purpose of use, and signature of authorized user.

Applications for admission

Series consists primarily of application forms completed and submitted by candidates for admission to the Training School for Nurses at the TGH 1881-1910 (graduating classes of 1884-1913). Some files also contain materials subsequently added, usually letters from students or their agents requesting information contained in their files.

The collection consists of a typescript of a diary of Thomas L. Blake covering the period from 1893-1890. Collection also includes a photocopy of Blake's handwritten original diary.

Newburgh Board of Education fonds

Fonds consists of the administrative records of the Board of Education of Newburgh.

The fonds contains four series: Minutes, Financial Accounts, Inspector’s Reports and School Census Books.

The fonds contains three subseries: Auditor’s Reports, Accounts, and Cheques and Vouchers.

Nurses' Alumni Association of the Winnipeg General Hospital/Health Sciences Centre fonds

The fonds contains all records pertaining to both the Winnipeg General and Health Sciences Centre Schools of Nursing including lists of enrolees, student time books, notes, and handbooks, teaching materials, examination results from the first quarter of the twentieth century, some diplomas and one complete run of years books.

The fonds also contains Alumni related material including the Alumnae Journal, records and history of the Alumni Association, biographical information on select graduates, reference files on nursing and the history of nursing, and information on the Manitoba Association of Registered Nurses (MARN).

The photograph collection contains images of student and nursing staff both at graduation and in and around the hospital campus. The slide collection contains teaching materials.

The special collection consists of textbooks, theses, an incomplete second run of the Alumni Journal and Yearbook, an incomplete run of the Canadian Nurse Journal and a small number of volumes related to the history of nursing. In addition, a collection of artwork and artifacts also exist including pins, uniforms, china and silverware

Fredericton Institution for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb

This fonds consists of a single bound volume of annual reports of the Fredericton Institution for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb, dating from 1886-1901. Reports are missing for the years 1884, 1889, and 1893. These annual reports give the names of managing committee members, officers, teachers, corresponding directors, subscribers, and parents, and provide information concerning funding and the students' progress. There are also reports prepared by the school superintendent and by the school physician.

A 1971 photograph of the Woodbridge House school building, on Woodbridge Street in Fredericton, is also included.

Fredericton Institution for the Education of the Deaf and Dumb

Varpu Lindström fonds

Fonds consists of Lindstrom's professorial and scholarly research files throughout her career, as well as records documenting her academic activities. Research files pertain to her publications and monographs such as "Defiant Sisters : A Social History of Finnish Immigrant Women in Canada, 1890-1930" (both the English and Finnish editions), and "From Heroes to Enemies : Finns in Canada, 1937-1947," as well as book chapters, articles, papers, presentations and lectures, and her involvement with the National Film Board production "Letters from Karelia," and subsequent research. The research files span the activities of Finnish and Finnish-Canadian organizations across the political spectrum, such as the Finnish Organization of Canada (left wing), and Loyal Finns in Canada (right wing). Records include oral history interviews (audio cassettes and transcripts), research notes, clippings, a significant and extensive number of photograph and letter collections passed down through generations of Finnish Canadians, diaries, correspondence, publication drafts, academic and professorial notes, microfilm of Finnish language newspapers published in Canada and archival records, financial records of Finnish-Canadian organizations such as newspapers and post-World War II relief funding bodies, scrapbooks, photocopies of rare and unusual documents such as two volumes of a Soviet register of Finnish War Crimes, a list of persons found in the mass grave at Karhumaki, and Soviet lists of North American Finns who journeyed to Karelia to help build a socialist utopia there, academic and professorial files, publicity files, files pertaining to her work with the School of Women's Studies, and her own papers as a university student. The fonds also includes letters written by Lindstrom as a newly-arrived teenaged immigrant to Canada to her best friend in Finland; many of these letters were published in Finnish with English translation in 'Letters from an immigrant teenager' in 2012.

The fonds consists of a recounting of his 1885 experiences in Steele's Scouts (1895); Glenmore SD cashbook (1889-1909) with Katherine's diary written in the back (1911-1913); Glenmore SD tax record book (1897-1909) with William's cattle records and accounts in the back; LID No. 221 minutes (1907-1920); appointments (1914, 1936); and photographs of Calgary area pioneers (1887-1903).
