Architectural Records Collection

  • Collection
  • 1857-2008

Architectural records are plans, drawings, blueprints, or other graphic or visual documents used in the design and construction of buildings, landscapes, or other manmade objects. Architectural records are the result of a lengthy process of gathering and refining data in order to prepare a design and produce final construction drawings and plans. Using surveys of the construction site, the architect produces rough sketches and diagrams of the proposed building. Preliminary drawings are then prepared and revised. The
final construction drawings include minute details about size, scale, structural systems, electrical wiring, plumbing, heating, and air conditioning systems, as well as interior and exterior finishes. The final plans, prepared by a photochemical process, might be reproduced several times, and might be revised as construction progresses.

The architectural records in this finding aid are listed chronologically, by series number, name of project, name of architect/architectural firm, and number of items. They have been arranged chronologically, according to date of building project. Each project constitutes a records subseries. Each subseries has been described according to name of building project, name of architect/architectural firm, and date span. Within each subseries, the records divide themselves into files according to type of drawing, such as sketches, mechanical plans, or detailed drawings. The architect's original organization and system of numbering has been maintained. When this information has been unavailable, the records have been organized by date and subject.

Records have been organized into the following six series:
Series /A: University of Trinity College, Queen Street West
Series /B: University of Trinity College, Queen's Park (Hoskin Avenue)
Series /C: St. Hilda's College
Series /D: Gerald Larkin Academic Building (Larkin Building)

Gertrude MacMillan collection

  • CA PCA Acc4990
  • Collection
  • 1910, [200-?], Copied 2008

The collection consists of two diaries of Gertrude MacMillan covering 1 January 1910 through 25 May 1910. The diaries are a daily account of rural family farm life. Outdoor chores include cutting and sawing wood, separating milk, thrashing, slaughtering pigs, and hauling manure. Helena "Wilhelmina" (Gertrude's younger sister) and Florence Coffin (her cousin who lived with the family) went to school, but Gertrude stayed at home and her diary records homemaking tasks such as baking and sewing. Gertrude also recounts visitors' names, passersby, pedlars, mail delivery, and purchasing household supplies and foodstuffs. Other than a sprained ankle, the only mention of Gertrude being ill is a sore eye on 25 May 1910, the last diary entry. The collection also includes a name key (to identify people mentioned in the diaries), two portrait photographs (one of Gertrude and one of her parents and sister) and two newspaper clippings regarding Gertrude's death in 1910.

  • 2007

This collection comprises documents received in response to an Access to Information request addressed to Indian and Northern Affairs Canada (INAC) by the Corporation of the Town of Deseronto, Ontario, in 2008. The request asked for copies of documentation submitted as part of the Culbertson Tract land claim of the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte and upon which the decision to allow the claim had been based.

The documents in this collection are all photocopies of materials located in public archives in Canada. The materials range in date from 1779 to 1959 and record the interactions between the Mohawks of the Bay of Quinte and the British and Canadian governments, in relation to lands, from the time of their departure from the Mohawk Valley to the mid-twentieth century.
