Allan Mackay fonds

  • ON00009 F 4569
  • Fonds
  • 2003-2006

Fonds consists of records created or used by Allan Mackay in the creation of the Veterans' Memorial on the grounds of the Ontario Legislature. Besides the artistic and architectural records involved in the development of the monument, the fonds also includes meeting minutes of various committees involved in the process and correspondence regarding the copyright status of the photographs used in the monument.

The fonds includes conceptual wall panels that were created six months into the project and document the evolution of the memorial's composition of images. They include four working panels of photographic images cut, arranged and adhered on paper. Cut outs on the panels reflect spots where Allan Mackay moved the images about. The remainder of the panels consist of montages of images printed on paper. These montages functioned as mock-ups of sections of the wall.

The photographs include digital copies of research photographs constituting the totality of images that the artist considered for possible inclusion in the memorial. They were acquired from various sources, including Library and Archives Canada, the Canadian War Museum, the Glenbow Museum, the Department of National Defence and various publications. The images are not accompanied by references or metadata about sources and citations. Also included are studio photographs that document the evolution of the memorial's composition of images, and include photographs of the conceptual wall panels.
