Congress of Black Women of Canada - Toronto Chapter fonds

Fonds consists of records created and accumulated by the Congress of Black Women of Canada - Toronto Chapter. The majority of the textual records concern the administration of the Toronto Chapter. Also included are records concerning the Barsa Kelly Cari-Can Housing Co-operative and the documentary Children Are Not the Problem. Fonds also includes sound and moving records concerning the documentary Children Are Not the Problem. Included are motion picture films and audio reels, which contain interviews with day-care workers, parents and education professionals and researchers that explore issues of racism in early childhood education. Artifacts include a Toronto Chapter office sign and a plaque presented to the Toronto Chapter from the Black Secretariat.

Sir John and Lady Hendrie fonds

Fonds consists of personal records created and received by Sir John Hendrie and his wife, Lady Lena Maude Hendrie. Fonds contains a family tree book, studio portraits of William Hendrie, correspondence to Sir John and Lady Hendrie, a photograph at the wedding of Enid Strathearn Hendrie to Lieutenant Colonel William Hugh Owen at the Government House, a photograph album in memoriam of Margaret Walker, and cabinet cards of Wiliam Hendrie and Margaret Walker in a picture frame. The family tree book begins with William Hendrie (1831-1906) and documents his lineage up to his great grandchildren. The book was created around 1933 and was kept up to date until 1973 with handwritten notes. Notable correspondence sent to Sir John and Lady Hendrie includes: holiday cards from the Governor General of Canada, Prince Arthur, Duke of Connaught; correspondence from Nellie Melba, an Australian opera singer; correspondence from Prince Edward [later Edward VIII and the Duke of Windsor]; correspondence with the [seal of King George V], holiday card from Patricia Ramsay [later Princess Patricia of Connaught]; correspondence from Ontario Premier M.T. Hearst; a portrait of Governor General Albert Grey, and a signed portrait of Prime Minister Robert Laird Borden.

David H.W. Henry fonds

Fonds consists of material created and received by Justice David H.W. Henry, mainly during his career as a university lecturer, federal civil servant, a judge of the Ontario courts and the Federal Court of Appeal and as an adjudicator of The Private Court (a private-sector law firm specializing in alternative dispute resolution). In addition to a small amount of material from his early life and career, the records mainly consist of notes, correspondence, background / support materials, court documents, and arbitration documents relating to cases which came before him. Also included in the fonds are speeches on the Combine Investigation Act, reference materials on various legal topics, university lecture materials, administrative files relating to his daily work as a judge at Osgoode Hall, and correspondence with his professional colleagues and acquaintances.

Leavens Aviation Incorporated fonds

Fonds consists of records created and accumulated by Leavens Aviation Incorporated from the outset of the creation of the company up until 2010. The majority of the records consist of photographs and architectural drawings. The photographs document the early years of the business, its facilities, company events, as well as aircraft the company owned. The architectural drawings consist of aircraft modifications undertaken by the Leavens company as well as drawings documenting various components of their facility on 3200 Dufferin Street, Toronto. The fonds is arranged into twenty-one series and documents various aspects of the Leavens aviation business, the aviation training schools they operated, its General Motor dealership as well as the company's manufacturing of fiberglass boats.

Ontario Mirror Dinghy Association fonds

Fonds consists of newsletters, mailings, correspondence, by-laws, minutes, photographs, moving image recordings and other material that documents the administration, activities and organizational memberships of the Ontario Mirror Dinghy Association since its formation to the present. The fonds has been organized into four series.

Inez Elliston fonds

Fonds consists of the professional records of Dr. Inez Elliston, a retired educator, community development leader, trainer, lecturer, researcher and writer based in Toronto, Ontario who specializes in intercultural education, anti-racism training, the management of diversity in the multicultural classroom and community, and the delivery of equitable educational policies. Specific records include: correspondence, reports, conference materials, papers and publications, research materials, presentations, teaching aides, promotional materials, clippings and photographs. The fonds documents Dr. Elliston's career as an educator primarily with the Scarborough Board of Education and the Ontario Ministry of Education as well as her work as a private consultant on several provincial and national initiatives addressing citizenship education, the needs of immigrant women, youth leadership training programs and university transition programs. Dr. Elliston's involvement with community groups and organizations such as the Canadian Council for Multicultural and Intercultural Education (CCMIE), the Ontario Multicultural Association multiculturelle de l'Ontario (OMAMO) and the Canadian Race Relations Foundation (CRRF) is also well-represented in the fonds. The fonds also includes Dr. Elliston's research materials and writings, both published and unpublished. Some of the topics addressed include multiculturalism, anti-racism and equity programming in schools, parent education, the accommodation of students in the school system and women's issues. Dr. Elliston's correspondence documents her professional career as well as her involvement with numerous community organizations, her conference presentations, awards she has received and her appointments to various boards and agencies.

Walter J. Gilling fonds

Fonds consists of photographs, correspondence and first person accounts written by Walter J. Gilling relating to his career as an army chaplain and Rector of the Cathedral Church of St. James. The fonds also includes personal records such as wills, birth and marriage certificates, and biographical information on Walter J. Gilling. The fonds includes Gilling's correspondence (which includes some reports) pertaining to his service during World War II as an army chaplain with the Toronto Scottish Regiment and documents honours, awards, and promotions achieved during the war. Additionally, there are Richard Gilling's (Walter Gilling's father) records pertaining to his service in the British army as well as his time as a prisoner of war. Present in the fonds is a badge that belonged to Richard Gilling from the First World War. Additionally, the fonds includes Walter J. Gilling's personal accounts, in both typescript and manuscript form detailing travels to Great Britain and Africa, his recollections of the war and descriptions of his work with troops during the war. The photographs depict portraits of Gilling's family in Ingersoll, Ontario. There are also several photographs documenting Gilling's time in Saskatchewan as a day labourer. Three wartime albums contain photographs taken during World War II depicting places Gilling served as army chaplain as well as the men in his various units. Panoramic photographs of the 1931 and 1932 Trinity College class featuring Walter Gilling are also included. Lastly, the fonds includes a collection of postcards that contain written correspondence between Gilling and family and friends as well as a collection of Wills's and Player's cigarette cards that Gilling collected while volunteering as a librarian with the Royal Canadian Military Institute (RCMI).

Spinks family fonds

Fonds consists of photographs taken by William H. Spinks and his brother, Alfred Spinks in Woodstock, Ontario. The brothers ran a photographic studio at several different addresses in Woodstock before splitting the partnership in the early 1900s. The studio was located at MacFarlane's Store at 463 465 Dundas, another building at 469 Dundas, another at 472 Dundas, the South West corner of 414 Dundas Perry, another at 425 Dundas and a last at 303 Simcoe. The subject matter of the fonds varies greatly. Several of the photographs are portraits of people and families at their homes. There are several portraits of groups of people posed in front of businesses, public buildings, cars and with farm animals. Other photographs include views of the town and residential areas around Woodstock, local businesses and storefronts, industries and various public buildings. The fonds also includes several photographs of railways, train derailments and building construction. The fonds includes photographs of original stereographs depicting town events like parades, views of the town and residential areas and of people posed with animals or business signs. The fonds also inlcudes several photographs of copy negatives of stereographs not created by the Spinks. The copied stereographs were created by a variety of companies, including Underwood and Underwood, and depict a range of scenes such as the military in South Africa, Paris, France and a comedy series entitled "Tommy visits a Dutch Farm." Unless otherwise noted, all photographs in the fonds can be attributed to either William or Alfred Spinks.

Richard J. Handscombe fonds

Fonds consists of records of Richard J. Handscombe relating to his work with the Ontario Educational Communications Authority (later known as TVOntario) creating programming for people learning English. Records relate to two television programs, The Sunrunners and Castle Zaremba. Both series include a number of multimedia publications. Castle Zaremba was a dramatic series aimed at individuals who were learning English. In addition to the television series there were accompanying scripts and exercise books, photobooks and audiocassettes. Other records in the fonds include clippings of articles and reviews of the TV series, reports on the use of the series in educational settings and correspondence relating to the airing of the program. The Sunrunners was a television series that included animation and live action and was aimed at French speaking children learning English. In addition to the television series there were film strips, audiocassettes and a teachers' aide. The fonds only includes episode one. Other records in the fonds include Richard J. Handscombe's contract with Ontario Educational Communications Authority, articles on the use of the series in educational settings and correspondence relating to the airing of the series.

Harvey Alexander Canning fonds

Fonds consists of low-level aerial photographs created and/or accumulated by Harvey Canning while serving with the Provincial Air Service or the R.C.A.F. Almost all the images are of locations in Northern Ontario with the exception of a few views of Toronto. Also included is a group portrait of Canning with fellow pilots and operators at a camp somewhere in Northern Ontario.
