  • CA PCA Acc4976
  • Collection
  • Transcribed [ca. 2006]

This collection consists of one CD-ROM which contains transcripts of letters written by Gordon Lawrence MacLaren of New Perth, Prince Edward Island to his parents during World War I. The CD-ROM also includes a copy of a photograph of Mr. MacLaren (ca. 1917-1918). Interspersed among the letters are photographs and summaries of relevant war-related topics which flesh out the background to the letters. These photographs and summaries are from unknown sources, unless marked. The transcriber adds remarks to clarify issues that would have been visible in the original records, such as missing pages, illegible words, etc. Gordon MacLaren's letters offer descriptions of landscapes and daily routines, as well as opinions on the war, politics and education. Also included in the collection are a few letters from MacLaren to other recipients, a few letters to or about MacLaren and one letter from King George in recognition of his "faithful services" rendered to the "Mother Country".

  • 1946-1991

This collection includes records related to Maritime Central Airways such as newspaper articles, histories, staff lists, statistics, aircraft information, photographs, and tariff manual excerpts. Some records concerning M.C.A.-Nordair, Wheeler and Eastern Provincial are also contained in the collection.

Maritime Central Airways (MCA) was established in 1941 by Carl Burke of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. The first flight of Maritime Central Airways was 7 December 1941. The airline was involved in passenger and cargo flights along with a number of other assignments including ice patrols for the Department of Transport, lobster and strawberry charters, seal surveys, forestry patrols for the Government of New Brunswick, bush flying, and ships crew transport. MCA had a wholly-owned subsidiary called Newfoundland Airways Limited from 1948 to 1951. In the early 1950s, MCA transported supplies and equipment for the Pinetree Project, the construction of U.S. radar stations from St. Anthony, Newfoundland to Frobisher Bay, Baffin Island. After the Pinetree Project was completed in 1954, Maritime Central Airways was the airlift contractor for an eastern chain of DEW radar stations (Distant Early Warning System). Boreal Airways of St. Felicien, Quebec and Mont Laurier Aviation of Roberval, Quebec became wholly-owned subsidiaries of MCA in 1956. On 27 November 1956 these two companies were merged as Nordair Ltd. In 1960, Nordair purchased Wheeler Airlines Limited. In 1963, Carl Burke sold Maritime Central Airways to Eastern Provincial. Nordair was not included in the sale of MCA. On 7 September 1967, James Tooley of Montreal bought eighty-five percent of Nordair, though Carl Burke remained a director and member of the executive committee until his death in 1976.

Data on Winter Communication

  • CA PCA Acc4961
  • Collection
  • 1897-1903

The "Data on Winter Communication" scrapbook contains clippings about ferry service from a variety of Prince Edward Island newspapers from 1897 to 1903. Many of the articles and letters from citizens argue about where the ferries should cross the Northumberland Strait. Two of the more popular locations for the ferry crossing were Summerside and Cape Traverse, Prince Edward Island. During this time period the steamship ice-breaker the "Stanley" and then also the "Minto" were providing passenger, mail and supply service between Prince Edward Island and the mainland. The newspaper clippings are glued into a copy of the "Fourteenth Annual Report of the Bureau of Animal Industry" (1897). Pages that did not have clippings glued on them were cut out at some point.
