Francis P. Jones fonds

Fonds consists of two handwritten day books and one handwritten cash book in which Jones kept records relating to his general merchant business. Entries list goods sold, prices of goods, customers' names, and customers' accounts. Goods include groceries and sundries such as silk, muslin, thread, whip lash, nails, cod fish, rum, and snuff. Many entries are for various fabrics and sewing items.

Thomas Burrowes fonds

Fonds consists of 114 watercolours, created between 1826 and 1861, by Captain Thomas Burrowes during his employment as Overseer of Works and later Clerk of Works of the southern section of the Rideau Canal. Several watercolours of Kingston Mills and Adolphustown were painted following his retirement in 1846. The watercolours depict the construction of and activities along the Rideau waterway and Kingston Mills.

John A. Macdonald collection

The collection consists of a small group of original letters sent and received by John A. Macdonald, dated 1855-1891. Subjects of the letters include: patronage appointments, a school bill, the 1860 visit of the Prince of Wales, Canadian confederation, election issues, and government railway policy. Also included is a letter of condolence from Conservative members of both Houses to Lady Macdonald, following the death of Sir John A. Macdonald.

Robert J. Turner fonds

Fonds consists of records of Robert J. Turner pertaining largely to his law practice. Fonds also contains a few letters addressed to his son, Frank Turner. Included is a docket book, 1849-1856, recording services performed for clients and fees charged. Also in the fonds are various legal documents such as affidavits, correspondence, court filings and records. Fonds also contains correspondence to his son, Frank Edwin Prince Turner, from 1879-1900.

Mary Sophia O'Brien fonds

Fonds consists of originals and typescript copies of the journals of Mary O’Brien between 1828 and 1838. The journals are in the form of letters which were written to keep her relatives in England informed of her daily activities. The journals give a daily account of Mary O’Brien’s life, including entries concerning: her voyage to North America on the Warrior; her arrival in New York city; her trip along the Hudson River on the way to Upper Canada; the cities of York (later Toronto) and Newmarket; Niagara Falls; local natives; pioneer house construction and daily living; travelling missionaries; the difficulties in maintaining law and order in an isolated community; Upper Canadian politics, including the Rebellion of 1837; and other issues. Journals also include photographs of paintings of Mary and Edward O'Brien, as well as some clippings regarding the history and churches of Shanty Bay.

Thomas Need fonds

Fonds consists of records arising from Thomas Need's activities in Upper Canada and England, including: maps, correspondence, diaries, notebooks, an essay, and biographical information. Correspondence consists of letters received from John Langton, Bishop A.N. Bethune, John Macdonald, Robert Dennistown, and Angus MacMurchy. Also included are letterbooks containing copies of outgoing correspondence regarding business and properties in Canada and England. Diaries relate to Thomas Need's activities as an emigrant and pioneer at Bobcaygeon for the years 1832-39, 1845, and 1847. Included in the later diary is an inventory of Need's property in Canada as of 1847, as well as a list of fox- hunts attended in England. Notebooks contain narrative and description on various topics including: native Indian life, clearing land, birds and trees of the Verulam area, Lord Durham's Report, the Seventh Provincial Battalion, his farm, and other subjects.

Gowan family fonds

Fonds consists of correspondence and related records sent and received by the James Robert Gowan and Ogle Robert Gowan. Also represented are other family members: James Robert's father Henry, mother Elizabeth and sisters Ann and Susan Elizabeth, his wife Anna, and Ogle Robert's wife Frances Anne. Correspondence also relates to James Robert Gowan's position as Judge of the District of Simcoe, Ogle Robert's involvement in helping to suppress the 1837 Rebellion, and family involvement in the Loyal Orange Lodge.

Records are arranged chronologically with undated materials placed at the end.

St. Peter's Anglican Church offertory and poor's account book

This volume is the accounts book kept by Reverend Edward Denroche for St. Peter's Anglican Church in Brockville. The left-hand pages of the volume itemize the date and amount of offerings received in the Church; the right-hand pages itemize amounts given to the poor, including names and details, such as "to blind Foster to pay for a cord of wood" - and "to French Mary". Many of the entries were made during a cholera epidemic, and record assistance to victims and to others such as runaway slaves.

Nicholas Goldschmidt fonds

Fonds consists of the personal and professional records of Nicholas Goldschmidt. The records reflect Dr. Goldschmidt's widespread involvement in Canada's opera and choral music scene.

The majority of the records relate to Dr. Goldschmidt's role in creating and producing music festivals, both in Ontario and in British Columbia, where he lived and worked before moving to Toronto in 1946.

Fonds contains several certificates and honorary degrees that were bestowed on Dr. Goldschmidt in recognition of his work in promoting opera and choral music.

Also included in the fonds are assorted invitations, cards, programmes and ephemeral items that Dr. Goldschmidt collected over his lifetime. These records reflect his standing in the opera and choral music world, his many awards and honours, and his passionate interest in producing and attending musical events.

Fonds contains a small number of photographs, most of which show Dr. Goldschmidt in his professional role as conductor and/or festival director, but some that also show Dr. Goldschmidt as a young boy in the country formerly known as Czechoslovakia.

Fonds also contains newspaper and magazine clippings of Dr. Goldschmidt's achievements and his productions. These clippings span his career, beginning in Europe and ending with the festivals he produced in his 80s and 90s in Canada.

Fonds contains Dr. Goldschmidt's speeches, which are mostly on the subject matter of culture and opera in Canada.

Also included are press releases and promotional material for festivals, as well as biographical information about Dr. Goldschmidt.

Fonds includes a small number of published documents that Dr. Goldschmidt had collected for personal research. Subject matter includes culture and music festivals in Canada.

Fonds also contains a small collection of minutes from arts foundations and arts council meetings that Dr. Goldschmidt attended.

Fonds contains a small number of audio recordings, both of interviews with Dr. Goldschmidt and recordings of performances that he conducted.

The fonds has been arranged into 12 series. Arrangement is based on the contents of the fonds.
