Noel Humphreys collection

Collection consists of eight newspaper clippings, seven of which are a series of articles on the findings of the Oxford University Ellesmere Land Expedition, with the eighth being a photograph of the Expedition’s winter quarters in Etah, Greenland. Five of the articles were written by the expedition leader, Mr. Noel Humphreys and the other two were written by members of the Expedition, Mr. Moore and Mr. Haig-Thomas. The articles were originally published in the “Times” of London but the clippings appear to be from the “New Zealand Herald”.

The collection consists of 9 photographs and copies of photographs showing scenes of Prince Rupert and area, groups of townspeople, a stone totem pole at Metlakatla, and a man poling a dug-out canoe probably on the Skeena River. It includes two newspaper clippings, one from the BC Saturday Sunset dated September 14, 1912 and another from The Globe dated Saturday March 23, 1907. The bound volumes of the Prince Rupert Empire newspaper were transferred to Special Collections. See accompanying note.

Cross family collection

The collection consists of 338 photographs, one negative, and documents relating to the cross family. The photographs in the collection come from four family albums donated by Don Cross after the death of his mother. They consist primarily of outdoor activities in and around Prince Rupert featuring family and friends as Don described his parents as great outdoors people who went everywhere. Areas and subjects in the photographs include: Salt Lakes, Metlakatla, Hays Mountain, Picnic Bay, Lucy Islands, Falls River, Remo, LakeElse Lake, Victoria, pets, steamships and people playing shuffleboard on deck, docks, railway tracks, swimming, boating, hiking, camping, scouts, class picnics, nurses, parades, the drydock, and fishing. It also includes a Canadian Red Cross registration form for Alan (1944-1945), and a Prince Rupert High School certificate for Phyllis (1925).

The collection consists of three photograph albums containing photos that depict scenes in Prince Rupert and the region from 1919-1927. These includes ships being built at the drydock and ships in the harbour and south of Prince Rupert, building stages of the government grain elevator, GTP tracks, barge and car slips, policemen in uniform, exteriors of houses, cabins and buildings, people engaged in activities like swimming and skating at Salt Lakes, witnesses for a Liard Murder Trial, hunting trips, boat trips and parades.

The collection consists of 52 photographs in Prince Rupert and Northwest British Columbia (1914-1952). It includes photographs and post cards of harbour views, the Isolation Hospital in Prince Rupert, Canadian Fish and Cold Storage (1914), Airplanes from the Round the World Flight (1924), bridge to the Quarantine Hospital on Dodge Island, pleasure boats such as the "Hazel" and "Florence B" and one belonging to Stanley Isaacson, S.S. Prince George, S.S. Malaspina, Telkwa, Hudson Bay Mountain, Kitwanga, glacier near Stewart, sand dunes at Tlell, Bulkley Valley and Skeena River (1952).

The fonds consists of photographs and textual records during the Second World War in Prince Rupert. It includes 73 photographs (1943-1945) of scenes in Port Edward, Prince Rupert, and the surrounding areas, Hagwilget Canyon, , Khatada Lake, and Chicamon Glacier. US Army scenes include an aerial view of Acropolis Hill, Eugene with a bear cub, post theatre, barracks, the day room, a Christmas Party (1944), the administration office, chapels at Port Edward and Prince Rupert, field house, reveille, mail call, U.S. Army Post Softball Team (1943-45), army PX, Military Personnel Office (1945), basketball games, dances, V-J Day parade and speeches at city hall, USO Shows, Ingrid Bergman at USO show. There is also a photograph of Eugene salmon fishing near Port Edward and typed lyrics to a song "Don't Ship Me Out" dedicated to the men of APO 997.
