Joseph Gander fonds

Society of Friends (Quakers) fonds

Fonds consists of records of the Canadian Yearly Meeting of the Society of Friends (Quakers), its constituent meetings, its standing committees, and other related bodies which entrusted their records to its care between 1955 and 1974. This includes records from the three Yearly Meetings that united in 1955 to become Canadian Yearly Meeting.

An inventory for the original records was prepared by the University of Western Ontario Regional History Collection in 1971, and reference codes were assigned. These reference codes are provided here in brackets next to the title, for the use of researchers who may wish to correlate published references to the microfilm and to the originals. In the University of Western Ontario reference codes, C identifies records of Conservative Friends, O identifies Orthodox records, and H identifies Genessee (Hicksite) records.

John Miller fonds

Fonds consists of two cash books documenting John Miller's travels and personal expenses. Entries include purchases of food, dry goods, medicine, tobacco, household supplies, and horses. Cash books also document money received from sales of barley and apples, as well as expenses incurred during travel in places such as Guelph and Paris.

William Ritchie fonds

Fonds consist of diaries which describe daily activities in the family, the church and the community of Canada West in the 1850's and 1860's. The first diary refers to activities in Sandwich, and the second is concerned with Jackson's Point, near the town of Sutton in York County. The second diary also includes descriptions of travels, as well as a few comments on the American Civil War.

John Strachan fonds

Fonds consists of an autobiography and diary to 1799, correspondence (mostly arising from Strachan's roles as teacher, Archdeacon, and Bishop), letterbooks, and sermons. Topics addressed in the correspondence and letterbooks include: appointments to various positions, Strachan's early experiences in Upper Canada, situations in his parish in Cornwall (including the influence of the Methodists in the area), the challenges of teaching in a small working class community, various activities during the War of 1812 (including attacks at York and other sites, Strachan's views of the military leaders of the time, and a list of Indian Warriors), the union of Upper and Lower Canada, the clergy reserves, the financial support of the clergy, and other subjects. Loose correspondence and sermons are arranged chronologically. Letterbooks contain an internal chronological arrangement, and considerable overlap occurs among volumes.

William Cochrane fonds

Fonds includes correspondence while Cochrane was in Scotland, diaries (which recount his daily activities in Paisley, Scotland, his school activities in the U.S.A., and his religious life in Brantford, Ontario), and notebooks (containing prose writing, speeches, and reports. Fonds also contains the journal of T. Edmondson of Brantford, Ontario, which consists of reminiscences of immigration to Canada, life on his farm near Brantford, and miscellaneous prose and poetry writings.

H. J. Cody fonds

Fonds consists of correspondence with family members; correspondence relating to and arising from: church matters, including Wycliffe College and St. Paul's Church; Cody's role as Chairman of the Board of Governors and President of the University of Toronto; his role as Minister of Education and from other education activities; as well as general correspondence and correspondence of Florence Cody and Barbara Cody. Fonds also contains the diaries of H.J Cody, containing information such as where he preached, the texts of his sermons, the names of people he visited, and baptisms, marriages, and funerals at which he officiated. Fonds also contains a series of subject files created when Cody was Minister of Education, as well as sermons, speeches, notebooks (containing notes on theological subjects), orders of service, programs (of St. Paul's Church and University of Toronto functions), pamphlets, financial records, invitations, some books, and miscellaneous notes, and printed material. Fonds also contains photographs of H.J. Cody and his activities, and Cody family and friends.
