A. Belcher & Co fonds

Fonds consists of incoming and outgoing correspondence documenting the business operations of A. Belcher & Co. and of Andrew Belcher’s activities as agent for the General Mining Association (GMA). The incoming correspondence are 41 letters (1825-1832, 1865) addressed to either Belcher or Almon which document shipments of coal, flour, cheese, gunpowder, fish and lumber; itemize contracts undertaken; and give details about other business dealings including mortgages, construction projects and outstanding debts. It also includes one letter written to Almon a number of years after the business had ceased operation.
The outgoing correspondence is a copy letter book attributed to A. Belcher & Co., 520 pages with a name index, covering 11 Sep 1830 to 16 Sep 1833. There are lengthy letters to supervisors of the coal mines in Sydney, Albion Mines (Stellarton), Bridgeport and Pictou, NS, as well as letters to Richard Smith, visiting GMA engineer; G.P. Duval the GMA contact in London; the London office of A. Belcher & Co.; and business contacts in New York, Jamaica, Bermuda, Boston, Newfoundland and Quebec. The contents document shipments of food stuffs and supplies, especially coal and the parts needed for the newly invented steam engine being installed in the coal mines by Richard Smith of London. One personal correspondent is with William Archer, a former enslaved man living in Bermuda, writing Belcher for help to free his mother. Belcher also comments on the postal service, an independent Cape Breton, and growing competition from the United States and Samuel Cunard.

Fonds consists of correspondence, photographs, speeches and addresses, radio broadcast scripts, Progressive Conservative Party of Canada documents, articles and essays, biographical information, and newspaper clippings and articles, loose and in scrapbooks, documenting the 1958 federal election and his year as President of the Canadian Bar Association (1980-1981). The fonds also includes correspondence with Progressive Conservative Prime Ministers and party leaders.

Fonds consists of correspondence and other records created and accumulated by Hawkins, relating to his career in medicine in Halifax and his political and personal activities. Includes correspondence concerning his medical appointments, patients and their conditions, and cases of professional misconduct; letters and legal documents concerning Supreme Court cases, Hawkins v. Snow and Hawkins v. McNally. Also includes family correspondence between Hawkins and his sister Annabel (Hawkins) Brehaut, letters from siblings Giles and Ella, letters from Hawkins to his children, and letters to and from acquaintances; deeds and other legal records concerning Hawkins' property on Gottingen Street and the related court case; correspondence, report, and other items regarding Hawkins' activities as mayor, including a draft letter discussing the Halifax Explosion; medical examinations and certificates; receipts; newspaper clippings; notes; miscellaneous items relating to Hawkins' involvement in political party associations; and estate papers pertaining to Charles and Charlotte Hawkins.

Fonds consists of records created and accumulated by Acadia Gas Engines of Bridgewater, N.S. and its associated companies, Acadia Stationary Engines Limited and Acadia Motor Car and Truck Company. Includes minutes of directors and shareholders meetings, 1908-1921; business correspondence, 1920-1952; appraisal reports on machinery and equipment, 1922-1927; original and microfilmed scrapbooks containing newspaper clippings, memoranda, notices, advertisements, photographs, and ephemera, 1922-1966; sales reports; financial statements, 1909-1947; patent documents; company catalogues, product literature and price lists; 1920-1951; and other related material. Fonds also contains technical drawings (working drawings and blueprints), 1928-1971, illustrating various marine engine models, parts for vessels including hydraulic pumps, hoists, and gears, Chevrolet automobile engines, and a file of architectural building plans. Includes drawings by Hercules Motor Corporation, Leyland Motor Company, Canadian Department of Defense, and others. Photographs contained in the fonds, ca. 1912-1962, include views of various engine models and parts, interior and exterior views of the Bridgewater building and facilities, exhibition displays including the Nova Scotia Fisheries Exhibition, a small number of images of W.T. Ritcey and other officers, the Ritcey residence, and advertising slides mostly of the Acadia logo.

Fonds consists of glass plate negatives, salvaged by B.R. Alexander, likely in the late 1970s or early 1980s, from A.E. Cornwall's by then abandoned and severely deteriorated former house in the vicinity of Hantsport. Also includes copy negatives with accompanying copy prints of images created or believed to have been created by A.E. Cornwall. The contents of the fonds document the community of Hantsport, Nova Scotia and environs with particular focus on ship-building and portraiture.

Fonds consists of records created and accumulated by Jones in the course of his political activities, including typescripts of correspondence to and from leading Nova Scotian politicians, printed copies of resolutions and petitions, and newspaper clippings relating to the anti-Confederation movement in Nova Scotia and elections, 1864-1882; letter book kept while Jones was minister of militia and defence, 1878; thirty-six letters written to Jones from Hon. Alexander MacKenzie, prime minister, mostly of a private political nature, 1869-1885; speeches, including one made as Lieutenant Governor of Nova Scotia, 1902; and military commissions. Also contains a file of personal correspondence, newspaper clippings, legal documents, and ephemera, most of which pertains to the Jones family and genealogy, 1846 onwards.

Fonds consists of two scrapbooks compiled by Agnes Dennis, containing newspaper clippings, photographs, correspondence, and invitations relating to her career activities, the Victorian Order of Nurses and Local Council of Women, Halifax. Also contains newspaper clippings concerning her husband, Senator William Dennis and daughter, Dr. Clara Dennis. Scrapbooks predominantly cover the period 1908 to 1947 but include items added years later by family member(s).
