General merchant, King's County, ledger : [1810-1843]

  • CA PCA Acc4218
  • Fonds
  • Microfilmed 1991

The fonds consists of the ledger (1810-1843) of an unidentified general merchant (possibly James MacDonald of St. Peter's Lake) who was supplying goods to people in communities from Pt. Deroche to East Point including Savage Harbour, Goose River, St. Peter's Bay, Naufrage, Allasary, Rock Barra, Morell River, Scotchfort, and Cable Head. It gives names and addresses, and sometimes occupations, of individuals having accounts with the merchant. There is a partial index in the beginning which lists the accounts by community. It appears to be one of a series of ledgers as most of the accounts have been carried forward from an earlier book.

HMCS "Charlottetown" bell photograph

  • CA PCA Acc3232
  • Fonds
  • [ca. 1980]

This collection consists of one photograph of the bell salvaged from the HMCS "Charlottetown", ca. 1980. The bell from the frigate HMCS "Charlottetown", launched in September of 1943 and then declared surplus and sunk less than four years later, was presented to HMCS "Queen Charlotte", the naval division in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. For years, the bell sounded the watch for naval reservists, sea cadets and navy league cadets during their training periods. In 1964, with the decommissioning of the naval division, the bell was turned over to the Confederation Centre Library under an agreement whereby it may be recalled by Naval Headquarters if another "Charlottetown" is ever commissioned. The bell hangs in the Library with the ship's crest and is rung every evening to warn that closing time is near.

In 1916 St. Joseph's School came under the school trustees of Charlottetown and was known as Rochford Square School. The building was demolished in 1979.

"History of St. Cuthbert's"

  • CA PCA Acc4172
  • Fonds
  • [ca. 1970]

This history of St. Cuthbert's Parish in St. Theresa's, Prince Edward Island traces the development of the parish from a mission church to 1970. The history includes a list of resident priests, a list of priests and sisters from St. Cuthbert's Parish and a list of the first Catholic settlers if the Mission of St. Cuthbert.

In the 1840s, following an influx of Irish Catholic immigrants to the Fort Augustus, Prince Edward Island, area, a mission church was established on the Baldwin's Road. This church, which had been dedicated to St. Cuthbert, served the mission for nearly thirty years when it was decided that a larger church was required. This second church stood from 1875 until 1879 when it was destroyed by a windstorm. Construction immediately started on a new church which was completed and dedicated to St. Theresa in 1886. In 1912 the parish hired architect James Harris to design a a larger church. Upon its completion in 1919 the new church was returned to the patronage of St. Cuthbert.

Tourism promotion photograph album

  • CA PCA Acc4500
  • Fonds
  • 1950-[196-?]

This fonds consists of a photo album containing approximately eighty pages of mounted black and white photographs which appear to have been taken during the 1950s and 1960s. Inserts include twenty-five photographs, one negative, seven contact sheets, and several pages of "National Film Board Cut Lines". Some of the photographs, which range in size from 2" x 2 1/2" to 8" x 11", are accompanied by descriptive captions. The photographs in the album are divided to various categories including: Agriculture, Beaches, Camping, Churches, Ferries, Fishing, Golf, Green Gables, Government House, Horse Racing, Highland Games, Lighthouses, Lobster Fishing, Monuments, Provincial Building, Scenes (Highway and Rural), Tourist Establishments, Park Playgrounds, Fishing Wharves, Rustico, and Swimming Pools. The final section of the album, consisting of approximately forty pages, is entitled "Contacts for Pictures Taken During Summer 1960, Photographer, David Forbert." The inserted twenty-five photographs include scenes of winter horse racing, fox farming, Richmond Street, the Maritime Central Airways, interiors of a passenger ferry boat, aerial views of the Provincial Buildings, and the Albany Travel Bureau.

The provenance of this album is unknown. It is suspected, however, that the album was compiled for use by the Department of Tourist Development in Prince Edward Island. Prior to 1940, the Prince Edward Island Travel Bureau existed more or less as a voluntary organization financed by public subscriptions and a grant from the PEI Government. On 2 January 1940, the Travel Bureau was taken over and operated as a Department of the Provincial Government. In the 1950s the Department name was changed to the Tourist and Information Bureau and in 1960 changed to the Department of Tourist Development. It would appear that the National Film Board was also involved in producing photographs for provincial tourist promotion for many years prior to the 1960s.

The molasses was imported from Barbados, with the salt coming from the "Turks Islands" and several other locations.
