No. 2 Heavy Battery camp at Brighton photograph album

  • CA PCA Acc4240
  • Fonds
  • August-October 1915

The fonds consists of a photograph album containing 114 images taken of the officers and men of the No.2 Heavy Seige Battery and their camp at Brighton Road, Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, while training for overseas duty between August and October 1915. The photographer is unknown. It is possible that the photographs were taken by J.H. McKay, a member of the Battery who was later killed in France. Each photograph originally had a number assigned to it by the owner which seems to indicate that they are part of a larger collection of an avid, well organised photographer. There are also some technical notations re. shooting.

The 2d Canadian Heavy Siege Battery was established in June of 1915 in response to efforts by Lt.-Col. Arthur G. Peake and other Prince Edward Island militia officers. It was to be a four gun unit with 6 inch howitzers and, after basic training in Charlottetown, was to proceed overseas with an authorized strength of 220. The majority of recruited men came from Prince Edward Island, with a few from New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, Great Britain and the United States. Before leaving for overseas a draft of regulars from the Royal Garrison Artillery were attached to the unit. From June until late fall the battery was stationed in tents on the Armoury grounds, Brighton Road, Charlottetown and introduced to army discipline and routine. On 26 November the Unit left Charlottetown on the Hochelaga for Pictou, N. S. and then travelled by train to Halifax where the men boarded the S. S. Lapland. Upon arrival at Plymouth Sound on December 5, they transferred to Roffey Camp at Horsham, Sussex for four months of training, followed by firing practice at Lydd. On 31 May 1916, the Battery crossed the Channel into France to join battle at the Somme, Vimy Ridge, Hill 70, and Passchendaele, moving on through Belgium and into Germany in late 1918. The Battery began its trek home from Mehlem, Germany, 4 February 1919, arriving in Halifax on 9 May 1919.

Classification Exports And Imports by the P. of Wales & St. Lawrence Commencing 1885

  • CA PCA Acc4493
  • Fonds
  • 1864-1915

From the 1830s to the early part of the 20th century, small steam vessels were the mode of transportation during open navigation, between Prince Edward Island and the mainland. These vessels plied the strait between Charlottetown and Pictou, carrying mails, passengers, and freight, and receiving a subsidy for their services from the provincial government of the time. Around 1864, the Charlottetown Steam Navigation Company was organized and the wooden paddle- steamers "Princess of Wales" and the "St. Lawrence" were placed by this company on the daily routes between Charlottetown and Pictou, and Summerside and Point du Chene. These steamers were eventually replaced with larger ships to accommodate the growing trade and travel. The Company's vessels brought to the province nearly the whole of its imports, and carried away daily full cargoes of its products.

The fonds consists of an account book containing detailed monthly accounts covering the years 1885 to 1888 and classifications of exports and imports carried as part of a steamship service. Types of goods are categorized with exports including sundries, fresh meats, cheese, dry fish, pelts and so on. Categories of imports include nails, sugar, oils, liquors, leather, iron, tin, pianos, sewing machines, and canned goods. The accounts are also broken down by the various steamer routes; Charlottetown to Pictou, Summerside to Point du Chene, Charlottetown to Point du Chene, Georgetown to Pictou, Murray Harbour to Pictou and Charlottetown, Souris to Pictou Landing, etc. The volume also contains several pages of "Comparative Statement Imports" and "Comparative Statement Exports" for the years 1882 to 1904. "First and Last Trips of Steamers" are listed for the years 1864 to 1915. Another section in the volume lists accounts for the passenger and freight services for the various routes covering the years 1874 to 1905.

Hillsborough Bridge (1902) construction fonds

  • CA PCA Acc4190
  • Fonds
  • 1901-1903

The fonds consists of some 33 photographs taken during the construction of the Hillsborough bridge in 1901- 1903. There are also two railway photographs. Photographer is unknown.

On 18 April 1900 an agreement was signed between the federal and provincial governments for the construction of a railway and carriage bridge across the Hillsborough River, Prince Edward Island. This was to constitute part of the Murray Harbour Branch of the P.E.I. Railway and would allow people east of Charlottetown an option other than travelling by ferry to and from Charlottetown or by road around Mount Stewart. Construction was begun in the spring of 1901 by M. J. Haney of Toronto under a detail contract. Twelve spans of steel bridgework were dismantled from a bridge near Derby Junction Station on the Miramichi in New Brunswick and eleven were re-erected and set on newly constructed piers to sit 15 feet above the high water line. The fifth span was a draw span which opened and closed for navigation on the river. In the late 1950's concern mounted that the bridge was growing too old to support the increasing traffic and it was closed for a brief period of time to the intense dismay of Islanders. Although it was reopened, it was soon after replaced by the current bridge in 1961 and was dismantled in 1963. The piers however were never dismantled and are still visible from the new bridge.
