Ditchburn Boats fonds

The fonds consists of records related to the ship-building heritage of the Ditchburn family, in particular Ditchburn Boats Limited, a boat building company owned and operated by Herbert Ditchburn in the Muskoka region of Ontario.

Fonds includes correspondence, notes and designs related to patent applications for boat parts invented by Herbert Ditchburn and for boat designs as well as general business documentation for the Ditchburn Boats Limited and its predecessors.

Fonds also consists of historical records and information about various shipbuilding companies owned by the Ditchburn family, including the Ditchburn and Mare Shipbuilding Company, which operated in England and built ships for Queen Elizabeth I to defeat the Spanish Armada as well as records related to Ditchburn family members.

Also includes material related to particular boats built by Ditchburn Boats Ltd. including boats built for the RCMP, the RCAF, raceboats that competed in the America's Cup and other speed boat races, in particular a series of boats built for Betty Estelle Carstairs.

ENVision - The Hough Group Limited fonds

Fonds consists of project records documenting numerous contracts undertaken or proposed to be undertaken by ENVision-The Hough Group and its various predecessor incarnations in the areas of landscape architecture, design, urban design and renewal, environmental assessments, community planning, ecological design and restoration, and recreation and tourism planning. The fonds also includes project records created by Michael Hough as an independent landscape architect and designer prior to the formation of the aforementioned firm in 1963.

The nature of the projects documented in this fonds include: residential landscaping services; landscaping and design of provincial parks and recreational centers; environmental assessment, protection and restoration measures for harbourfront and park areas; interior and exterior landscaping and design of government and corporate buildings and educational centres such as federal administration buildings, insurance company buildings, and universities and other schools.

The fonds includes architectural drawings such as sketches, conceptual drawings, presentation drawings, plans, sections, elevations, and details. Some drawings may include overlays, colour, or extensive annotations. Technical drawings are included for design elements.

Additionally, the fonds includes textual records documenting the projects, including correspondence, cost estimates, meeting minutes, tender bids and contracts, project specifications, reports, schedules, and news clippings.

The records also include photographs documenting project sites and construction work, maps, audio cassettes, and artifacts such as fabric samples.

ENVision - The Hough Group Limited

Vera C. Pletsch fonds

Fonds consists of research material collected and used by Vera C. Pletsch while writing her two books: Not Wanted in the Classroom, a history of the origins of special education in Ontario, which was based on her thesis of the same topic, and Not Just the Strap, a history of discipline in Ontario's classrooms.

Research material includes both annotated photocopies and original records. Types of records include newspaper clippings, journal articles, correspondence, interview transcripts, meeting minutes and reports.

Included amongst the records related to Not Wanted in the Classroom is material about the community of Kirkland Lake, in particular about Donald Frisby, an early proponent of special education. The widow of Mr. Frisby gave Vera Pletsch the records her husband had accumulated to aid in her research. Included is correspondence (primarily with the provincial government), memos, reports, meeting minutes and records relating to the Ontario Association for Retarded Children.

Photographs depict staff and students at schools around Ontario. Audio cassettes are interviews about special education and discipline in the classroom.

Donald Lloyd McKinley fonds

Fonds consists of records pertaining to Donald Lloyd McKinley's career as a furniture maker, educator and designer in both the United States and Canada. These materials include academic records, employment records, project designs and drawings, correspondence, awards and prizes, published materials, photographs, journals, audio cassettes and records relating to the Sheridan College School of Crafts and Design in Oakville, Ontario.

The academic records document McKinley's educational career, from high school to university graduate studies and include transcripts, notebooks, research materials, photographs and drawings as well as materials pertaining to his graduate studies thesis, "Wheel Chairs: A Problem in Support and Transport."

The employment records document McKinley's professional career. Most of these relate to time spent as Chief Staff Designer at the Gunlocke Chair Company in Wayland, New York and as a design consultant in Tasmania, Australia. Records include photographs, design memoranda and sketches of various pieces of furniture.

Records pertaining to McKinley's role in the development of the Sheridan College School of Crafts and Design include drawings and photographs of various pieces of furniture, promotional materials, newspaper clippings, minutes of faculty meetings and audio cassettes featuring recordings of design sessions and lectures.

Personal records include book drafts, correspondence with three of his friends who were also professional furniture makers, awards and prizes, journals, design pamphlets and catalogues, newspaper clippings, diaries, photo ID cards, published materials as well as records relating to his wife, Reena Ruth Gowdy McKinley, a Canadian ceramicist.

The photographs document Donald Lloyd McKinley at work, comprehensive views of his furniture designs and the work of additional furniture designers.

The drawings are both originals and reproductions and depict designs from all phases of McKinley's academic and professional careers including: chairs of various types, axel stands, storage or display racks, tables and desks, kitchenware, appliances, wheel chairs, canes, luggage racks, lecterns and stools.

All series are arranged chronologically.

John McQuarrie fonds

Fonds consists of photographs of Toronto and vicinity taken by John McQuarrie. Many of the photographs were used as source material for the book "Toronto then and now" by Mike Filey (Ottawa: Magic Light Publishing, c2000). McQuarrie co-designed the book and provided the contemporary photographs.

Subjects covered include Toronto landmarks and buildings, neighbourhoods, parks, public art, skyscrapers, roads and highways, and waterfront areas and beaches. The area covers Toronto east of the Humber River to west of the Scarborough Bluffs, and from the waterfront to Pearson Airport and York University. Over half of the images are low-level oblique aerial photographs. The particular images used for the book have not been identified or set aside.

McQuarrie, John, 1946-

Andrew D. MacLean family fonds

Fonds consists of materials illustrating the personal life and publishing career of Andrew Dyas MacLean, including private and business records inherited by him concerning his father Hugh Cameron MacLean and uncle John Bayne MacLean, both publishers as well. Further personal records pertain to his paternal grandparents, Rev. Andrew MacLean and Catherine Cameron, and his mother's family, the Dyas family of Toronto.

Publishing records include primarily correspondence, notes, and issues of publications, with some statements, minute books, and other administrative records. Personal records are comprised of correspondence, household accounts, real estate papers, clippings and records of social activities, and various materials illustrating key aspects of the lives of Andrew D. MacLean and his family: for example, his grandfather's sermons, his uncle John's phrenological records, his father Hugh's records of the Toronto Canoe Club, and his own service as secretary to Prime Minister R.B. Bennett. Fonds also includes photographs, paintings, and books.

Fonds contains records reflecting the MacLeans' social and family connections with: European nobility and other members of the upper class, including the Duke of Devonshire, the Queen Regent of Portugal, and Sir Fitzroy Maclean of Morvern; key international business contacts of the time, including Charles S. Rolls and Frank A. Munsey; and important Canadians such as Prime Ministers Bennett, Borden, Meighen and Pearson, Billy Bishop, Goldwin Smith, and E. Cora Hind.

Materials reflect the activities principally in southern Ontario, with some records from the Canadian Arctic, the Rocky Mountains, Scotland, England, Australia, and the Mediterranean.

Fred W. Hotson fonds

Fonds consists of the records created and accumulated by Fred W. Hotson for the research and writing of two books on the history of de Havilland Canada: The de Havilland Canada Story (1983) and de Havilland in Canada (1999).

Hotson's research materials include newspaper clippings and photocopies of articles, photographs, de Havilland histories, motion picture films, chronologies, and facts and statistics, as well as de Havilland publications, such as the de Havilland Gazette, the de Havilland Mosquito, and aircraft catalogues. Due to Hotson's close affiliation with de Havilland Canada, he procured a number of original corporate records, which are also included in this fonds.

Specific aircraft documented in this fonds include all eight of the aircraft types designed and built by de Havilland Canada: the DHC-1 Chipmunk, DHC-2 Beaver and Turbo Beaver, DHC-3 Otter, DHC-4 Caribou, DHC-5 Buffalo, DCH-6 Twin Otter, DHC-7 Dash 7, DHC-8 Dash 8; some of the de Havilland England aircraft represented in the fonds include many in the Moth series, including the Cirrus Moth, Puss Moth, Tiger Moth, Fox Moth, Hornet Moth, and Moth Minor. Other de Havilland England aircraft documented in the fonds are the D.H.84 Dragon, D.H.90 Dragonfly, D.H.98 Mosquito, and D.H.100 Vampire.

Records relating to specific aircraft created or imported by de Havilland Canada may include newspaper clippings, interior photographs of cockpits and exterior photographs of the aircraft, catalogues, technical data and specifications, outline drawings, pilot's notes and operating instructions, pilot training guides, model specifications, design analyses, aircrafts' business histories and performance summaries, and Hotson's handwritten research notes.

Nearly all of the photographs in this fonds are professional photographs, taken for public relations or advertising purposes; there are very few amateur snapshots included in this fonds. Similarly, photograph albums are presentation albums created by de Havilland Canada, showcasing aircraft and de Havilland operations.

In addition to photographs of aircraft, there are also photographs showing de Havilland Canada staff, including pilots, engineers, directors, and female personnel working on production during the Second World War. Additional photographs documenting special events, such as actress Joan Fontaine's visit to de Havilland Canada, Air Marshall W.A. “Billy” Bishop's visit, Family Day, and the opening of the new cafeteria are also included. Photographs of de Havilland Canada facilities at Mount Dennis, Malton, Shepperd Avenue, and Downsview are all included; photographs show aircraft production inside the plants, exterior shots of the hangars, and aerial views of the grounds.

De Havilland Canada's extensive work during the Second World War is well documented in the photographs, particularly in the Mosquito images. These show military grounds crews loading Mosquitos with bombs and shells, Mosquito attacks on an automotive factory in France, Mosquito attacks on a U-Boat Supply Depot, among others. Textual records regarding the Mosquito are similarly extensive.

Records documenting de Havilland Canada's experimental or special projects are included in this fonds, such as the design of FHE 400 HMCS Bras D'Or, an Antisubmarine Warfare hydrofoil ship; and the design of STEM (Storable Extendable Tubular Member), a self-erecting antenna designed for Canadian and American space programs.

The films depict various de Havilland Canada aircrafts including the Puss Moth, Gypsy Moth, Caribou, Mosquito, and the Dash 7. The films also show the production and launch of the Canadian Hydrofoil, footage of the Royal Canadian Air Force, Minefinders' Airline, and the building of the DEW and Mid-Canada lines. Additionally, there is footage of the first trans-Canada flight by RCAF squadron leader Earl Godfrey and James Dalzell McKee in 1926 and a film entitled "Res-X Airlift" that consists of footage showing the transport of equipment from Frobisher Bay to Resolution Island in the Arctic.
