Fonds consists of the correspondence and financial records of the Dawson family, as well as the records of Simon James Dawson, Civil Engineer, and William McDonell Dawson, Crown Lands Department employee. It includes incoming letters and telegrams, as well as manuscript copies of some outgoing letters relating to commercial, financial, or legal matters. Most letters are those received from other members of the family, civil authorities, business acquaintances, and government officials, and relate to family affairs, the Dawson's activities in the lumbering industry, William Dawson's work and personal problems in the Crown Timber Office, and Simon Dawson's work on the Grandes Piles Road and on the Red River exploratory expeditions. Correspondence also includes telegrams received by William Dawson from his brothers Simon and Charles, from C.K. Ogden of Three Rivers, and others. Fonds also includes the financial records of Simon Dawson in his role in the construction of the St. Maurice River facilities and the Piles Road, and as leader of the Red River Expedition to explore and report on topographical features and transportation routes between Lake Superior and the Red River. Records include statements of expenditures, pay lists, supply lists, receipts, tenders, way bills, and requisitions. Also included are some family household and personal financial records.
