Charles Drew fonds

  • CA PCA Acc2602
  • Fonds
  • [ca. 1895-1920]

The fonds consists of 157 images. These have been reproduced from 57 glass plates and 95 nitrate negatives. Once copy negatives were produced the nitrate negatives were disposed of. There are 21 original images which match the nitrate negative images as well as 3 mounted originals and two postcards. Subjects of images include churches and other buildings, Micmacs, vessels, rural and beach scenes. Many are of Charlottetown locations and events. There are interior images of Moore and MacLeod, Drake's Meat Market, and St. Paul's and Trinity churches as well as two shots taken at Smith's Hotel in Hampton. A large portion of the collection consists of candid shots of Charles Drew, Mamie Gillespie, and friends in recreational activities such as picnics and visits to the shore, including bathing. The two postcards are of the C.G.S. Minto. Some of the images in the collection, particularly the glass plate negatives, appear to be the work of A. W. Mitchell. It is likely the other photographs were taken by Charles Drew and Mamie (Gillespie) Drew.

  • [188-]

This collection consists of a photograph depicting Mt. Stewart bridge with the Bourke house and outbuildings on the far side of the bridge in the distance. One man with a bicycle and two women are standing in the roadbed this side of the bridge. One of the Bourke mills is partially visible. The photograph was likely taken by A.W. Mitchell. John Roche Bourke was a prominent landowner, merchant and shipbuilder. In the 1880's he lived at Mt. Stewart Bridge, Prince Edward Island, where he operated a general store as well as operating flour, saw, and carding mills. Bourke, his wife Isabell, and their four children left the Mt. Stewart area in the 1890's.
