Rolls family fonds

Fonds consists of 164 glass plate negatives of photographs taken in Toronto, Woodbridge, Chatham and Halton County of Rolls family members. The majority of the individuals in the photographs are relatives of Dr. Allison Montague Rolls and David S. Paterson. Identified individuals in the photographs include Margaret (Dickson) Clapperton, Allan M. Dymond, Francis R. Dymond, Helen Dymond, Blanche Edwards, Miss Elliott, Mrs. James Gordon, Mrs. A.R. (Paterson) (Rolls) Gregory, Mrs. T. Gregory, Theodore Gregory, Vincent Gregory, Maggie Hardy, Mr. Hartley, Annie Joyce, Olive Joyce, Ernest Laidler, Gordon Laidler, William Logie, Myrtle McCallum, George McClarty, Jane McClarty, Frances Murray, Miss M. Murray, Mrs. R. Murray, Stewart Murray, Miss Helen Paterson, James A. Paterson, John A. Paterson, Miss Rispin, Jim Rolls, Mary Rolls, Kitty (Paterson) Shenstone, Saxon Shenstone, Miss Sherriff, Mrs. Sherriff, Noel Simmonds, W.R. Somerville, M.R. Stewart, R. Stewart, Nora Stinson, and Alice Watts. Also included are school group photographs taken at the following schools in Halton County: School Section (S.S.) #3, Richmond, Kelso, or Christie School (S.S. #6), and S.S. #8 in Nassagaweya Township; Dufferin School (S.S. #10), Ligny School (S.S. #1), Quatre Bras School (S.S. #2), and Waterloo School (S.S. #5) in Esquesing Township; as well as three unidentified school groups. Several photographs depict Ontario churches, including Boston Presbyterian Church in Mansewood, Esquesing Township; Hornby Presbyterian Church; St. Augustine's Church in Toronto; St. Jude's Church; St. Matthias Church; and St. Paul's Presbyterian Church. Also depicted are two manses, one in Mansewood and one in Hornby. Other photographs show various Toronto locations, buildings or structures, including the Don Valley Brickyard, the Independent Order of Foresters' Arch, the Manufacturers' Arch in honour of Queen Victoria's Jubilee, Toronto's Parliament Buildings, and the Toronto Presbyterian Ladies' College.

Jarvis family photographs

Fonds consists of 63 photographs, mainly of the Jarvis and Irving families who were related through marriage. The photographs were made in Ontario, New York State, England, and Scotland. Most of the photographs have inscriptions on the verso identifying the subjects and providing dates. There are large numbers of cartes de visite, card photographs, and cabinet cards.

Accompanying the photographs are three handwritten documents listing names, dates and ages of Jarvis, Irving and Fyson family members. These are listed and housed with the photographs (see C 173-0-0-0-64 to C 173-0-0-0-66).

Jarvis (family)

James Harrington collection

Fonds consists of a collection of cartes de visites and tintypes originally housed in a Victorian photograph album. Photographs show foreign celebrities such as Abraham Lincoln, Bismarck, and members of the British Royal family. They also show Canadian public figures, most notably politicians such as John A. Macdonald and his fellow members of the Legislative Assembly of the Province of Canada during the 1860s. In addition, there are also portraits of individuals, many of whom are named, who likely were connected to the original, unidentified creator of this collection. The tintypes and cartes de visite have been removed from the album in which they were originally housed.

Annie Elizabeth Saunders fonds

Fonds consists of cabinet cards, cartes-de-visite, gelatin prints and post cards (both black and white and hand-coloured) taken or collected by A.E. Saunders. The photos depict her family life and nursing career and include views taken in England, South Africa and Cobalt, Ontario. Some of the amateur prints were taken either by A.E. Saunders herself (although none explicitly identify her as the photographer), Dorothy May Saunders, a relative by marriage, or other nurses. Others were taken by professional photographers. Some of the photos have identifying information and dates written on the back.

The majority of the photos depict Cobalt, especially the Cobalt Mines Hospital. The Cobalt views, many on post cards, depict mines, street scenes, and various buildings. Of particular interest are views of the 1909 and 1912 Cobalt fires, and views of Sir Wilfrid Laurier opening the Y.M.C.A. on September 18, 1912. There are also interior and exterior views of the Cobalt Mines Hospital, portraits of nursing staff (including A.E. Saunders), and photos of nurses with patients.

As well, there are portraits of nurses in Great Britain during World War I, including some of nursing staff with military personnel. There are also a number of Saunders family portraits taken in England and Canada, with some identification. Finally, there are pre- Boer war views of nurses and a hospital facility in South Africa.

Edith Mary Maitland Monro fonds

Fonds consists of eight portraits, including one cased ambrotype and two cased daguerrotypes. The ambrotype portrait shows Mr. and Mrs. John Rolston (184-?); the case containing two daguerrotype portraits shows Mr. and Mrs. Rolston (185-?), and the third case contains a daguerrotype of Alex Maitland Monro (1832-1884) dated ca. 1860, and an albumen print of the Monro family (1874).

The remaining portraits are of Edith Mary Maitland Monro (1879-1971) ca. 1890 and ca. 1900, and of Mrs. Alexander Maitland Monro (Miss Jane Rolston, 1841-1916 ), ca. 1870.

Alfred H. Chapman fonds

Fonds comprises records of Alfred Chapman, a Toronto-based architect between 1906 and 1943.

Fonds consists primarily of architectural drawings associated with projects undertaken by Chapman's architectural firms: Chapman and McGiffin; Chapman and Oxley; Chapman, Oxley, and Bishop; and Chapman, Oxley and Facey. Included are specifications, correspondence, and other materials, including photographs and prints. Projects include residences, office buildings, religious houses, and public buildings, including educational institutions and recreational structures.

Fonds also contains materials related to the architectural projects. These include such as reviews of Chapman's buildings in architectural publications, and also general reference for ornamentation, decoration, and design, in the form of portfolios and loose plates, prints, and tearsheets.

The records have been augmented with materials of a biographical or genealogical nature, some collected by Chapman's son Howard D. Chapman.

Fonds has been arranged into four series according to functional differences in the records.

William E. Fleury fonds

Fonds consists of the records of architect, William E. Fleury. Fonds includes architectural drawings and photographs documenting Fleury's various projects. Projects represented include: offices for Canada Packers Ltd.; the Service Building for Queen Elizabeth Hospital; the Collis Leather Factory; St. Andrew's Church, Scarborough; Coliseum Building, Exhibitions Park, Canadian National Exhibition Grounds; Victoria College Women's Building; schools at Englehart, Guelph and Moosonee; and Robertson Davies's home in Albion Hills. Fonds also contains correspondence, memoranda, brochures, accounts, certificates and inspection reports, pertaining to various projects. Fonds also contains an alphabetic and numerical list of jobs of Fleury Architectural firm, 1945-1964.

Canadian Car and Foundry fonds

Fonds consists of photographs of Canadian Car and Foundry facilities in Fort William, Brantford, and Welland, Ontario. The images document the fabrication of cast metal work, railway rolling stock, and World War II aircraft. Images also show the construction and finished interiors and exteriors of many foundry buildings, as well as close-ups and overviews of male and female staff operating machinery and welding. Included in C 190-6 is a very small amount of textual material and a technical drawing.

Julien LeBourdais fonds

Fonds consists of photographs taken by Julien LeBourdais, a Toronto-based professional photographer.

The photographs document a wide range of subjects including prominent sports figures, politicians, artists, entertainers, business leaders, and royalty. In addition to notable personalities, the photographs also cover political events including campaigns and elections, diplomatic visits to Ontario, activities of major labour unions, factories and workers, sporting events, protests, and various geographic regions throughout the province. While the vast majority of the photographs are of Ontario events and personalities, some have a wider national or international context.

The arrangement of photographs reflects Julien LeBourdais' original filing system in the first three series and his own arrangement in the remaining series.

Fonds consists of 1,878 glass plate negatives taken ca. 1895 to ca. 1910 by Simon Peter Bartle and his brother, Herman Arthur Bartle, known professionally as Bartle Brothers.

Photographic subject are predominantly groups and individual residents of various Glengarry and Stormont County communities including: Fassifern, Grantley, Lancaster, Martintown, North Lancaster, St. Andrews, and Williamstown. In addition, general subjects including area business enterprises, dwellings, churches, vehicles, and recreation.

Fonds is arranged into 20 series: portraits (series 1); clothing and dress ( series 2); banks (series 3); business enterprises (series 4); canals (series 5); canoes and canoeing (series 6); churches (series 7); country life (series 8); death (series 9); dwellings (series 10); farming (series 11); farms (series 12); gardens (series 13); hunting (series 14); pets (series 15); railroads (series 16); recreation (series 17); sports (series 18); streets (series 19); and vehicles (series 20).
