This fonds documents the business and political activities of Peter Mitchell, Jr. It includes business and political correspondence as well as a poem on Mitchell and politics. The fonds also includes financial records -- notes and bills relating to Peter Mitchell's brother, James Mitchell, 1861-1872, and an article, "The Secret History of Canadian Politics."

Barry family

This fonds documents the legal career of Jeremiah Hayes Barry and sheds light on his family life, his personal activities, and the activities of his children.

It consists of more than 450 legal case files that contain correspondence and legal documents pertaining to property transactions, the settling of estates, civil suits, bankruptcies, agreements, and other matters. Legal records also include additional professional correspondence, a legal ledger (1887-1906), a journal pertaining to the Symonds & Burpee estate (1880-1891), office accounts, ledgers, and legal papers (1840s-1900s).

Personal records include correspondence relating to J. H. Barry's appointment to the Supreme Court, his personal correspondence, and materials relating to the Victoria Public Hospital, the University of New Brunswick, St. Francis Xavier University, St. Dunstan's parish (Roman Catholic) and St. Dunstan's school.

Family records include the correspondence of J. H. Barry, Isabella Barry, and the Barry children; household receipts; invoices; materials pertaining to the children's schooling (examinations, study notebooks on various subjects, grades); Charles Barry's lecture notes from Dalhousie law school; newspaper clippings; and photographs.

Rev. Leo Giles Shea fonds

Fonds consists of records relating to Rev. Leo Shea including, baptismal certificate, academic recommendations from St. Bonaventure's College, letter of recommendation as a prospective candidate for the priesthood (1951), academic reports from All Hallows College, Ireland, letters of pastoral appointment, letters of condolence including correspondence from the Lieutenant Governor and the House of Assembly. Fonds also includes printed material related to his life.

Tilley family

This fonds includes political and public correspondence, petitions, reports belonging to Sir Leonard Tilley and papers related to Alice Tilley's involvement in women's and benevolent organizations. There are business and personal correspondence, receipts, leases, and account books of Tilley and his wife.

Statistical information on: Saint John Post Office employees' salaries, 1866, 1872; ships built and registered in New Brunswick, 1863-1871; imports and exports for New Brunswick 1863-1871, all probably assembled as background information for Sir Leonard, is also included.

Botsford family

This collection consists of Botsford family records donated by 4 different donors. Records relating to Amos Botsford include accounts payable, land records and records of annuities belonging to Deborah Murray. A list of the Loyalist settlement in the Annapolis/Digby area, Nova Scotia includes equipment and tools received from Amos Botsford and names of families. There are also complaints about Amos Botsford's handling of Loyalist claims.

Records relating to William Botsford include his receipt book, 1801-1829, for legal services rendered and testimonials and recommendations written for individuals including one for immigration purposes. There is also a copy of a warrant re William Botsford's salary as assistant judge. Documents pertaining to the Supreme Court case of Robert Crookshank and William Walker v. J. White, George Nowlan, and George Ketchum probably also belonged to William.

There are certificates and other personal papers belonging to Garrad Clopper, Harry G. Botsford of Boston, LeBaron Botsford and Sarah Cyper. Family and business correspondence, 1782-1913. Deeds for Botsford family property from 1797 to 1837 are also included.

There are also ephemeral items including Valentine's Day and other cards, and a printed poem by Maud Botsford entitled, "Our Boys," probably from the First World War. The apprenticeship indenture of Frederick Turner as a clerk and writer to Henry George Clopper of Wakefield, York, Co. N.B. is dated 1827.

There are family and legal papers relating to the Clopper, Murray and Ralph Cook estates. A plan of the Clopper farm in Fredericton is also included.

George T. Baird

This fonds consists largely of the records kept during the time that Baird was a senator, including correspondence about patronage and other political matters. Subjects include Victoria Telephone company, railways, bridges, ferries, and roads, and land transactions. There is correspondence about Indian Reservation and lumbering, including contracts and crown timber licenses.

The fonds also includes material related to the John J. Kupkey estate and the Beveridge, Cameron estates. There are minutes of Liberal-Conservative Association, 1895, the Perth Sabbath School Register, 1877, and accounts of the Baird General Store at Perth, 1877, 1881, 1885 and for Victoria Co. Telephone Co., 1903.

James Quinton family

This fonds consists of James Quinton's records of his building and construction projects and other family records. It includes estimates, tenders and other construction documents for various banks, churches, houses, bridges, railways, the Court House, the Saint John Custom House, the Provincial Lunatic Asylum, the General Hospital, the Sailor's Home and Lighthouse, the Post Office, and the Opera Hall; 1848-1879 together with James Quinton's correspondence, wage records and business accounts.

There are also assessment notices, deeds, leases and other material of Quinton Family, 1785-1875. Family correspondence includes letters from John Boyd Quinton, San Francisco, to his brothers, John Quinton and James Quinton, 1849-1863, and correspondence belonging to John Quinton, Alfred Quinton, and William A. Quinton.

The fonds includes documents relating to approximately 300 civil cases, as well as extensive files on non-litigated land transactions, debt collections, and estate administration. Included is particularly interesting material on the legal aspects of constructing the railway through Kings County. While there are no criminal law files, there is considerable documentation arising from the role as clerk of the peace. Although the geographical focus is Kennebecasis Valley, other counties included are Albert, Queens and St. John.
