Colwell family

The collection consists of 3 record books, 8 scrapbooks and 2 boxes of material relating mainly to Saint John local history. There are 2 fire station record books recording fire alarms in Saint John, 1889-1900 and 1901-1907. The books provide dates, box numbers, building owners and locations, damages, causes and insurance coverage.

The 1889-1900 record book was kept by E.P. Leonard (1852-1907), an engineer at No. 4 Engine House. A third book contains photographs of drawings in the New Brunswick Museum collection and a photo of St. Philip's African Methodist Episcopal Church on Queen Street, Saint John. Some of the scrapbooks are indexed and contain pasted newsclippings. A large quantity of material relating to fires and firefighting is included. The boxes contain newspapers, sketches, various awards and certificates, written histories, and about 75 snapshots (mostly identified).

The collection consists of correspondence and records, mainly related to Crawford's involvement with various arts clubs and societies and their exhibitions. The correspondence, primarily with the Maritime Art Association, deals particularly with exhibitions. Many letters mention the effects of the Second World War on art exhibits. There is also some correspondence relating to "Martime Art : A Canadian Art Magazine" which was launched in October 1941. The Maritime Art Association records include information on annual exhibits. There are lists of exhibitors names and addresses, titles of work and prices. There is also a typed copy of a brief presented to the Royal Commission on National Development of the Arts, Letters and Sciences (Massey Commission, 1949) along with various other reports, and minutes of annual meetings.

The Saint John Art Club material includes copies of the regulations for picture loans with lists of borrowers on the reverse side. There are reports on art club activities, Julia's notes regarding establishing an art gallery, and information on the Toronto Art Gallery exhibit including works by Saint John artists Jack Humphrey and Dorothy Currie. There are membership lists with addresses and minutes of monthly meetings. Some business and financial papers are also included. There are class lists for both junior and senior art classes, given by the Saint John Art Club from 1916 to1920, with names of instructors and students and two rolls of Art Club officers for 1919 and 1920. There is also material related to the Federation of Canadian Artists and other art groups. Material related to the 1941 British Children's Art Exhibit includes aspeech by Mayor Wasson on CHSJ radio appealling for the public support of a sale of artwork by British children in aid of air raid victims.

This collection consists of family and business records belonging to the Hilyards and related families. The business records of Thomas Hilyard and, after 1873, Hilyard Brothers include lumbering agreements, invoices, accounts, mortgages, deeds, shipbuilding agreements and a volume with shipping accounts, lists of vessels built and voyages made. There are also journals, day books and other accounting records of Thomas Hilyard and Hilyard Bros, a record of lumber sawn at Hilyard Bros., payroll and time books Material belonging to the Seeley family includes records about the ship "Australasian", bonds, agreements, deeds, invoices and receipts to Alexander McLachlan Seely from Saint John businesses, insurance documents, accounts and personal correspondence. There is also information about the Acadia College Endowment Fund and Leinster Street Baptist Church and an account book of Spring Dale Paper Mill, 1877.

There are also records relating to the Saint John harbour issue, 1885-1914, and documents about the ship "Magna Charta", 1865-1884. Invoices, accounts, workmen's accounts and other material belonging to the related McDonald and Roberts families are also included. There is an abstract book of surveyors' summaries of lumber transported by scow, 1897-1900, and a letter book of F.W. Holt (Saint John civil engineer), 1909-1913.
