Nursing Department records

Series consists of reports conducted by and for the Nursing Department and miscellaneous items. File 17.0.1 consists of a report on turnover in the Department, prepared in June 1981 by the Task Force on Nursing Turnover, Louise Lemieux-Charles and Bernice Gerhart Co-Chairpersons. The purpose of the Task Force was “to identify problems which may contribute to high staff turnover…[and] to make recommendations to improve retention of nursing staff.” File 17.0.2 consists of the final report (May 1983) on TGH Operating Room Services, conducted for the Vice President, Nursing by Woods Gordon Management Consultants. The report reviews factors “impeding the efficient utilization of the operating rooms and generating conflict amongst the staff” and makes recommendations, including “upgrading systems (information, staffing, materials management) and the expansion of some resources (space and staff).” File 17.0.3 consists of a Nursing Staff Survey (November 1983), a follow-up assessment of the effectiveness of staff retention strategies recommended in the report contained in file 17.0.1 .

Plans and Architectural Drawings

Series consists of surveyors’ plans, site plans and maps of various TGH properties in the City of Toronto, and architectural drawings of TGH buildings at both its Gerrard St. and College St. sites.

File 33.0.30 contains copies of plans and drawings ([185?]-1910) from the collection of the Metropolitan Toronto Reference Library. File includes photographs (28.5 X 35.5 cm), photostatic positives (28 X 43 cm) and photostatic negatives (28 X 39 cm) of architectural drawings of TGH Gerrard St. site by William Hay, Architect [185?] and by Gundry and Langley, Architects (1864-1866); and photographs (28 X 35.5 cm) of architectural drawings of “Central Block”, TGH College St. site, by Darling & Pearson, Architects (January 1910).

Dr. Augusta Stowe-Gullen papers

This series consists of various documents and photographs relating to the life and activities of Dr. Augusta Stowe-Gullen (ASG).

File TW 14-0-2 contains photographic portraits of ASG and her mother, Emily Howard Jennings Stowe. File TW 14-0-3 contains materials relating to ASG's involvement with the Ontario Medical College for Women: a copy of the College's calendar for 1905 with ASG's name inscribed on the cover; and "A Brief History of the Ontario Medical College for Women" (1906) by ASG.

File TW 14-0-4 contains materials relating to ASG's involvement in the women's suffrage movement, including a copy of letters patent incorporating the Canadian Suffrage Association (April 1912) in which ASG is named as one of the founding directors; "The History of the Formation of the National Council of Women of Canada" (1931) by ASG; "A Synopsis of Woman Suffrage in Canada" ([193?]) by Hilda Ridley, with ASG's manuscript inscription "I gave the material to Miss Ridley to write this synopsis"; a copy of the Constitution of the Canadian Suffrage Association ([1912?]); a delegate's badge and ribbon for the Annual Convention of State and National Woman Suffrage Association (October 13-21, 1908, Buffalo N.Y.); a delegate's badge and ribbon for the 31st Annual Meeting of the National Council of Women of Canada (October 8-15, 1924, Toronto); a delegate's ribbon for the World's Congresses of 1893 - Department of Women's Progress; and a draft membership card and membership application form for enrolment in the "Canadian Women's Suffrage Association (The League for Representative Government)".

File TW 14-0-5 contains materials relating to ASG's education: lecture attendance certificates for the School of Practical Science, Toronto (1878-79), the Toronto School of Medicine (1879-1882), and the Toronto General Hospital (1879-80); a certificate of matriculation issued by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario (May 1879); and graduation diplomas issued to ASG (College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario) and her husband, Dr. J.B. Gullen (Trinity College, College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario) April 1883.

File TW 14-0-6 contains various ribbons documenting ASG's service as a member of the Toronto Public School Board: Toronto Public School Board Member (1893), Public School Games Trustee (June 29, 1895), and Public School Games Judge (June 29, 1895).

File TW 14-0-7 contains miscellaneous materials relating to ASG: a copy of ASG's autograph; a list of ASG papers in the custody of her executor and nephew F.C. Gullen (March 1953); a greeting card with a portrait of Isabel Marjoribanks, Lady Aberdeen, as a child; and a copy of an article by Kathleen Smith "Dr. Augusta Stowe Gullen: A Pioneer of Social Conscience" CMAJ June 15, 1982, Vol. 126. pp. 1465-67.

Registers

Series consists of registers maintained for various purposes. File 1.1.5.1 is a register of graduates of the School 1881-1918, including students’ names and year of graduation. File 1.1.5.2 is a register of graduates of the School 1883-1940, including maiden and married names, whether deceased, and year of graduation. Files 1.1.5.3 and 1.1.5.4 are registers of student grades 1898-1920 and 1920-1935, including students’ and examiners’ names; date; course name; grade. File 1.1.5.5 is a register of students’ attendance 1927-1936. Files 1.1.5.6 and 1.1.5.7 are registers of probationary students 1913-1925 and 1926-1943, including students’ names, age, address; dates of probationary and full admission to the School; notes on students’ health, character, academic performance and potential. Files 1.1.5.8 and 1.1.5.9 are registers 1948-1958 and 1958-1970 documenting use of the School seal, including date, description of purpose of use, and signature of authorized user.

Applications for admission

Series consists primarily of application forms completed and submitted by candidates for admission to the Training School for Nurses at the TGH 1881-1910 (graduating classes of 1884-1913). Some files also contain materials subsequently added, usually letters from students or their agents requesting information contained in their files.

Certificates and Diplomas

Series consists of four certificates acknowledging completion of course in midwifery in the Lying-In (Maternity) Department 1886-1900, signed by the Chairman and Secretary of the TGH Board of Trustees, and by the Medical Superintendent; a diploma issued to TGH medical staff member Dr. C. Edward Cooper Cole by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario 1907; and various certificates acknowledging attendance at autopsies and competence to report post-mortem examinations, issued 1882-1916.

Photographs

Series consists of photographs documenting various aspects of the administration and student life of the TGH School of Nursing. File 1.1.11.1 contains negatives of graduating class photographs 1888-1974: negatives for 1889, 1892 to 1899 are missing. File 1.1.11.9 contains portraits of TGH School of Nursing Superintendents Mary Agnes Snively, Jean I. Gunn, and Mary E. Macfarland.

Series consists of reports prepared by the Superintendent/ Director of the TGH School of Nursing and her assistants. Reports were prepared for various purposes and submitted to various individuals and corporate bodies: see sub-series-level descriptions for details. Reports contain information pertinent to the administration of the School. Some reports contain information relating to individual students of the School.
