Young Women's Christian Association of Yukon fonds

Fonds consists of records reflecting the formation, development and disbandment of the Young Women's Christian Association (YWCA) in Whitehorse and the Yukon. The records reflect the association's primary goal of providing accommodation and assisting young women and families in the Yukon through educational programs and activities.

The fonds consists of original photographs and textual records. The photographs depict scenes of sternwheelers Casca, Keno, Aksala, the wreck of the Klondike I, and the M. V. Loon on the Yukon River; waiters in the dining room of a sternwheeler; Fred Young in the engine room of an unidentified sternwheeler; and miscellaneous views including the tent city at Bennett, a cattle scow in the Whitehorse Rapids, a view of Whitehorse from the clay cliffs, and northern lights. Also included are two panoramas, taken by E. Andrews, of Whitehorse and Dawson City. The textual records include a hand-written account of Mr. Young's reminiscences of his life and work in the north, and of Yukon Gold Rush history including a description of his father borrowing $50.00 from Soapy Smith of Skagway, shortly before Smith was killed. He describes his father's varied career and the difficulties the family encountered during their first few years in the north. He also describes his work for the White Pass and Yukon Route (WP&YR) and the people he met. A part of his narrative focuses on a return trip he made to the Yukon in 1964. Also included are newspaper clippings on a variety of Yukon-related subject matters.

The fonds consists of original photographs taken by Sandy Yeulet in the Whitehorse, Yukon area, ca. 1926-1930. Some of the scenes are of the dam just below Marsh Lake, the sternwheelers "Thistle" and "Gleaner", Whitehorse Rapids, a native gravesite, the Whitehorse Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) detachment and hockey games.

James Edward Beatty fonds

The fonds consists of reference prints and copies of text written by James Edward Beatty from his time in the Yukon. The photographs depict White Pass and Yukon Route (WP&YR) construction scenes, trains, views of Skagway, Klukwan and Dalton Trail, ca. 1898-1900. There are two original slides of a White Pass & Yukon Railway Medal presented to Beatty, July 31, 1900 in recognition of faithful service on construction of White Pass and Yukon Railway. Textual records include a copy of Beatty's prospecting/surveying diary, 1901, as well as copies of newspaper clippings, poems, photos, Free Miners' Certificate, menus, passes, etc, ca. 1899. There is also a copy of speech notes written by Beatty for a speech he delivered to a Rotary Club Meeting, May 29, 1944, in Sarnia, Ontario. In the speech he describes his experiences in the Yukon, including seeing the shooting of Soapy Smith.

The pages in this collection are photocopies of several newspapers articles from the Yakima Daily Republic and the Seattle Sunday Times and one small publication. Most of the material is about Belinda A. Mulrooney Carbonneau and her business successes in Dawson City, Yukon during the Klondike Gold Rush. As well her life after the Gold Rush in Yakima, Washington is discussed. Other articles are accounts of Judge James Wickersham, Alaskan delegate to Congress and his visit to Yakima and the part played by Margaret Mulrooney, sister to Belinda, in bringing the Judge to Yakima.

Charles Wynn-Johnson fonds

The fonds consists of a photograph album containing 175 original photographs, 11.5 x 9 cm, taken and collected by Mr. Wynn-Johnson. The photographs are mostly from his time in Skagway. They include views of the White Pass and Yukon Route (WP&YR), the Skagway wharf, dog teams, street scenes and images of Charles Wynn-Johnson's wife, in-laws and other family members. The textual records consist of five photocopied pages from the book: The Woodwards: A Family Story of Ventures and Traditions, by Douglas Harker. Mitchell Press, 1976.

The collection consists of one b&w photograph of Annie Ned, Johnny Fraser and Jim Boss wearing traditional clothing at the Ice Palace in downtown Whitehorse, Yukon. The event may have been the first Yukon Sourdough Rendezvous in 1947. The photograph was taken by the donor's mother, Amy Clethero.
