Western Hours

This sub-series consists of copies of the TWH internal publication Western Hours (WH).

WH was begun in 1953 as the Hospital's staff yearbook/ Christmas magazine, containing articles by staff and administrators, news and announcements, photographs and drawings, poetry, departmental reports and staff obituaries.

From 1953 to 1959 the magazine was published by the TWH Personnel Department and edited by the Hospital's Personnel Officer (Norman Thompson, issues Christmas 1953 to Easter 1956; and Shaun Duffy, issues Christmas 1956 to Christmas 1959). During these years WH was published irregularly, but always at Christmas. From this period this sub-series is missing at least six issues: edition nos. 1-2, 1957; and edition nos. 1-4, 1959.

From 1960 to 1976 WH was published by an "Editorial/ Magazine Committee" under various editorships. Beginning with the Christmas 1977 issue WH was published by the TWH Department of Public Relations, under the editorship of Public Relations Officer Kathleen Wright.

The last issue of WH in magazine format was the annual Christmas issue for 1983. Beginning with an issue dated September 1, 1984 WH was published bi-monthly as a 4-page newsletter, replacing the companion TWH publication West Winds as the staff newsletter. Kathleen Wright continued to edit WH in its new format until June 1986. From July 1986 to May 13, 1987 WH was edited by Public Relations Officer Lucie Baistrocchi; from May 28, 1987 until April 22, 1988 WH was edited by Public Relations Officer Joanne Milner.

Articles of special note published in WH include:

West Winds

This sub-series consists of copies of the internal TWH publication West Winds (WW). WW was first published in August 1963, by the TWH Personnel Department, under the editorship of Kathleen Wright. WW was initially published as the TWH staff newsletter, in a single-sheet format, with a monthly publication schedule. In 1973 the TWH Public Relations Department was formed and assumed responsibility for publishing WW: Kathleen Wright, now appointed Public Relations Officer, continued as editor. In 1974 WW was expanded to 4 pages, and between November 1981 and August 1984 was published in 4, 6, or 8-page formats. Beginning with the issue for December 1984, WW replaced Western Hours as the TWH's principal public relations publication: it was now published in magazine format, with 4 or 5 issues per year. Kathleen Wright's last issue as editor was for January 1986; Lucie Baistrocchi succeeded her as Public Relations Officer and as WW editor. The last issue surviving in the Archives is for Spring 1989. There are gaps in coverage; some issues are missing.

WW issues of special note include:

  1. July 1967 (file TW 9-2-5): Canada Centennial issue
  2. December 1968 (file TW 9-2-6): issue honouring M.B. Wallace on his retirement as TWH Executive Director
  3. April 1973 (file TW 9-2-11): issue covering legislated transfer of control of funding for hospital nursing schools from the Ontario Ministry of Health to the Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities
  4. January 1976 (file TW 9-2-14): issue devoted entirely to the history of the Toronto Western Hospital
  5. April 1980 (file TW 9-2-18): issue containing obituaries of M.B. Wallace and Grace Paterson, former TWH Director of Nursing
  6. January 1986 (file TW 9-2-24): issue devoted to the 90th anniversary of the Hospital
  7. Autumn 1986 (file TW 9-2-24): on the opening of the Fraser M. Fell Pavilion
  8. Summer 1987 (file TW 9-2-25): contains an article on the history of the TWH Auxiliary
