Archives General File collection

The Archives General File is an artificial collection of accessions which do not constitute separate fonds or collections or cannot be placed within existing fonds or collections. Included in the collection are textual records of many types, such as manuscripts, reports, letters, diaries, speeches, poetry, plans and others; photographs in the form of prints, negatives, transparencies, albums, postcards, etc. sound recorded interviews and programmes; and motion pictures. Material pertains broadly to the Banff area and many other areas within the Archives collecting mandate. Notable items include: Walter Wilcox letter; George Kinney report; interviews with Bill Round and Edward Feuz; original copy of Treaty Number Seven; Mary Schaffer material, including letters, notes, photograph and report; reports on the Nakimu Caves; film pertaining to Banff Winter Carnival; Georgia Engelhard letters and photos; plans for buildings and structures; George Noble photograph; W. S. Park photograph.

Professional photographers collection

Collection contains credited and uncredited professional photographs, mainly taken along the line of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) in western Canada. Includes unidentified photographs and individual photographs that cannot be placed in other fonds or collections. Eighteen albumen prints are uncredited views along the Canadian Pacific Railway between Glacier, B.C. and Canmore, Alberta, ca.1895. Also includes views by Bailey Bros., H. O. Dodge, Alexander Henderson, T. J. Hileman, B. W. Kilburn, Neelands Bros., W. J. Oliver, Henry Greenwood Peabody, Prest Photo Company (William Archie Prest), and others. Nineteen prints, received as contents of 5 album pages, are travel views between Banff, the Pacific Coast and Washington, U.S.A. Includes views of Lake Minnewanka, Banff Springs Hotel and Glacier, B.C. Views are by Wm. Notman & Son, Boorne & May and other unidentified professional photographers. Album is presentation album of professional views taken along the Canadian Pacific Railway between Victoria, B.C. and Banff, Alberta, September to October 1889, by an unknown photographer. Includes views of Banff and area, Field and Glacier areas, Fraser Canyon, Vancouver and Victoria. Album was possibly produced by of for the CPR. Views are similar to those produced by other professional photographers working along the railway. Images in album are accompanied by hand-written captions and exact dates. Collection was assembled by the Archives & Library, Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies.

Collection pertains mainly to Jasper National Park area and includes series of prints of Press Berry pack trip. Berry was a Jasper, Alberta outfitter who, with brother Charlie Berry, made yearly pack trips to the Yellowhead region beginning ca.1910.

Collection includes: certificate of general resolution of appreciation commending Jack Curren, Frank Betteridge, Frank Gombert, F. Wells, Reno Fitten, William Child and Ralph Rink for aid in the rescue of Mrs. W. E. Stone, July 24, 1921, and recovery of the body of Dr. W. E. Stone, d. July 17, 1921, on Mount Eon; and various photographs collected by Duke from unknown sources. Included is a Dave White & Sons Ltd. poster of eight prints, showing store 1894 to 1948; also a poster of male descendants of John Brewster, ca.1965, with ten images.

Peter and Catharine Whyte collection

Collection includes a variety of items collected by the Whytes. Two albums include views of personalities, places, winter sports and other events, wildlife and scenic views at Banff and area, ca.1915-1925. Most views were made with Kodak 3A camera and at least some are attributed to Dan McCowan and George Paris. Third album is mainly scenes in Yoho National Park; includes numbered, annotated prints (perhaps postcards). Other items in collection include: manuscript, "The Canadian Rockies" by A. P. Coleman, n.d. letter, by T. Zouave to R. G. Brett, 1917; Park Hotel account book, Banff, 1906-1907, with records of Canmore house project, 1968-1969; receipt, 1919, and letter, 1966, re piano owned by Norman Luxton and Iva Smith; plan for CPR stop-over log cabin at Sunshine Valley, 1927; signatures of the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, n.d.. Canadian Jr. [ski] champions from Alberta [poster], 1962.

Artificial collection of summit and cairn notes and registers assembled by the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies. Consists of notes and registers recording ascents and routes for various peaks in the mountains of western Canada. Includes notes by prominent mountaineers, guides and personalities, including Rudolf Aemmer, Glen Boles, Eaton Cromwell, Georgia Engelhard, Edward Feuz, Val A. Fynn, Lillian Gest, Christian Hasler, Conrad Kain, Arnor Larson, A. H. MacCarthy, Alex McCoubrey, Don Munday, Phyllis Munday, H. P. Nichols, C. L. Noyes, George M. Weed, C. S. Thompson, Pierre Trudeau and others. Also includes registers placed by the Alberta Rockies Mountaineering Society, an organization established to coordinate the climbing of seventy- five Alberta mountains as an Alberta 75th Anniversary Project. The names of individual mountains, peaks and prominent mountaineers represented in this collection are maintained in subject data field.
