Noel Humphreys collection

Collection consists of eight newspaper clippings, seven of which are a series of articles on the findings of the Oxford University Ellesmere Land Expedition, with the eighth being a photograph of the Expedition’s winter quarters in Etah, Greenland. Five of the articles were written by the expedition leader, Mr. Noel Humphreys and the other two were written by members of the Expedition, Mr. Moore and Mr. Haig-Thomas. The articles were originally published in the “Times” of London but the clippings appear to be from the “New Zealand Herald”.

The fonds consists of an excerpt from the book "Adventures on the Columbia River, including the narrative of a residence of six years on the western side of the Rocky Mountains, among various tribes of Indians hitherto unknown: together with A Journey across the American continent" by Ross Cox, 1832; an article by Nick Tanasiuk about homesteading at Rock Island Lake, Alberta; an article from the magazine Encompass, Oct. 1998 "Portage La Biche, the forgotten portage" by Tom Maccagno; a copy of 1915 "An act to incorporate the Athabasca and Fort Vermilion Railway Company"; information on Lac La Biche's 200th Anniversary in 1998; 1913 "An act to incorporate the Athabasca Club"; newspaper articles regarding Athabasca from the Calgary News Telegram, Calgary Albertan, and Edmonton Journal. There are also articles about Alex Stratton, Athabaska Investment Co., 1911; NWMP report mentioning Constable Hubert Thorne; excerpts from "Journal Notre Dame Des Victoires, Lac La Biche".

Collection consists of photographs of geologic formations and topographic features; native peoples; northern communities; logging, mining, fishing and whaling activities; survey field parties; and miscellaneous subjects including some of U.S. Geologic Survey offices and staff. Most photographs were taken in Alaska, but also represented are the Yukon, Virginia, Maryland and Texas. Texas photographs are of oil fields and refineries, ca. 1917. Most photographs are dated and include descriptive captions. Photographs received in albums but removed for conservation purposes.

The collection features areas such as the District of Alberta, Rocky Mountain House, the Rocky Mountains, First Nations Territories, the Northwest Territories; maps featuring the exploratory work of Peter Pond and David Thompson; and maps featuring the settlement of Hudson's Bay Company and the North West Mounted Police.

First Flight over the Rockies Commemoratory collection

The collection consists of material commemorating the first flight over the Canadian Rockies in 1919 by pilot Captain Ernest C. Artificial collection of summit and cairn notes and registers assembled by the Whyte Museum of the Canadian Rockies. Consists of notes and registers recording ascents and routes for various peaks in the mountains of western Canada. Includes notes by prominent mountaineers, guides and personalities, including Rudolf Aemmer, Glen Boles, Eaton Cromwell, Georgia Engelhard, Edward Feuz, Val A. Fynn, Lillian Gest, Christian Hasler, Conrad Kain, Arnor Larson, A. H. MacCarthy, Alex McCoubrey, Don Munday, Phyllis Munday, H. P. Nichols, C. L. Noyes, George M. Weed, C. S. Thompson, Pierre Trudeau and others. Also includes registers placed by the Alberta Rockies Mountaineering Society, an organization established to coordinate the climbing of seventy- five Alberta mountains as an Alberta 75th Anniversary Project. The names of individual mountains, peaks and prominent mountaineers represented in this collection are maintained in subject data field.
