Peter and Mary Lester fonds

The fonds consists of records referring to Peter Lester's time as mayor. There is one item of correspondence from the State of Alaska thanking Peter for travelling to Ketchikan for the inauguration of MV Wickersmith in 1968. There are photographs taken between 1958-1992 of trips to China and Japan, the unveiling of the restored Japanese fishing boat Kazu Maru in Prince Rupert's Mariner's Park, the interior of the courthouse and CityWest, city crews, road construction, streets, official openings, presentations and visits by politicians. There are also photographs of the fire hall on Fulton Street, the swimming pool on 2nd Ave., parks, housing, the airport ferry, golf course, ball fields, sawmill, the seaplane base at Seal Cove, Philip M. Ray Insurance and Travel, the Chatham Daycare, RCMP and RCMP ball, a baseball team and Bernice Liu being honoured at a celebration. There is also a photograph of mayor and council when Dr. R.G. Large became Freeman of the City in 1977. There are cassette recordings from interviews on radio with Peter and some of dictated letters from the mayor's office, a diary from 1961, newspaper clippings from 1958-1966, and certificates. It contains a certificate Mary received from the Prince Rupert Community Council and negatives, film cassettes and film indexes that depicting community celebrations and family events such as birthdays, parades, dance recitals, weddings and graduations from 1988 to 1993.

The fonds consists of scrapbooks and photographs related to activities of community theatre groups in Prince Rupert from 1960- 1970. 192 photographs were removed from the scrapbooks for archival storage. Within the scrapbooks there are newspaper clippings regarding high school productions, programs, correspondence, and certificates. Photographs depict various actors who were involved in plays during that time period.

The fonds consists of both black and white and colour photographs with 2 photograph albums taken by Don Hamilton during the 1940s and 1950s when he worked in various fish plants in British Columbia. They include photographs of operations at Carlisle, Bones Bay, and Butedale canneries. There are some photographs depicting family and friends, Claire Salter, Norman Christenson, Charles McMillan, William Malcom, and Sylvester Anthony MacDonald in a way of life enjoyed by people living at the canneries. There are also photographs of the RCAF MTB Rescue Boat M-234, five vessels named Mary K, Venture, Sambo Point, Coquitlam, and Cape Calvert, as well as helicopters and float planes used for a rescue operation when a U.S. Bomber crew ditched on Princess Royal Island in the 1950s (Broken Arrow). Also includes a hand painted photograph of a paddle wheeler, and photographs of Vancouver.

The fonds consists of correspondence. It includes six letters written by Anna Harrison while living in Prince Rupert to her parents James and Margaret Smellie and sisters Madge and Lucy Traill Henderson back in Glascow, Scotland (1909-1910). There is a paragraph in one letter written by Benjamin Harrison about purchasing a lot in Prince Rupert. It also includes one letter written by Mary Ellen Reddie (1909) to her sister Margaret Smellie (nee Morrison), Anna Harrison's mother. The letters describe life in Prince Rupert at the time and the work of Dr. John Oates Reddie, Benjamin Harris's business Brilliant Signs, Prime Minister Laurier's visit to the city in August 1910, and the Grand Trunk Pacific Railway Company.
