Martha Jane Stewart fonds

  • CA PCA Acc5023
  • Fonds
  • 1880-1882; 1891-1892

This fonds consists of two diaries of Martha Jane Stewart which detail the daily life of a farm family in the West Cape area of Prince Edward Island. Mrs. Stewart mentions the daily weather, homemaking activities, visitors and visiting, and farm events. The February 1881 entries offer a description of her daughter Helen's illness and death due to diphtheria. On 7 December 1881, a baby baptized Francis Walter was born. Walter became very ill and died in April 1882. The second diary reveals that a son Roy started school on 12 October 1891. The young household servant Minnie Murray (1876-1959) also attended school. Martha Jane's husband Farrer seemed to regularly be away from home on business, and the second diary seems to expand the business dealings to include a store.
