The diary outlines the teenaged sisters' daily activities as well as those of their family and neighbours. Comments about the weather and events in the community are also mentioned in the diary. The fonds also includes a letter written by Ruth Cairns, daughter of Annie Alice Anderson Cairns, to her cousin Georgia MacFarlane, dated 19 April 1911. Also included are biographical notes about the Anderson and Cairns families provided by the transcriber of the diary, Winifred (Cairns) Wake.

  • Transcribed [199-]

The diary contains an account of the voyage from the port of Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island on 2 December 1858 to arrival just off the harbour of Auckland on 9 May 1859. Graham appears to have transcribed entries in their entirety to the end of January and from then on to have combined this with a precis of some "less interesting" sections. Details recorded include raging storms and becalming doldrums, course and mileage covered, food, illnesses encountered, and behavior of passengers. There is no account of the passengers first impressions of their new home. Also included is a copy of the survey of the "Prince Edward" declaring her fit for the voyage and a page of genealogical notes re. Henry Smith and his son John.

Ledger of Roderick Munn : [1876-1912]

  • CA PCA Acc4325
  • Fonds
  • Microfilmed 1993

This fonds consists of a ledger which might more correctly be called an account book and diary. It documents Munn's accounts with various persons and firms in both the Wood Islands and Marshfield areas including the Dunstaffnage Cheese and Butter Company. The remainder of the volume is really a yearly calendar of his farming activities; when plowing and planting took place, what varieties of seed he used, in what quantities, yield and disposal of crops. Loose papers include pages supplementing accounts for estates for which Munn served as executor, i.e. Elizabeth Goff, Hector Munn, Stephen Mills, and William Bell, byelaws of the Central Mutual Fire Insurance Co., and a draft address to [Donald Montgomery?] on the occasion of his departure for the Canadian Senate by the residents of French Fort, Dunstaffnage, Suffolk, Marshfield, Little York, etc. in recognition of his efforts in procuring the right for them to purchase their lands.

Martha Jane Stewart fonds

  • CA PCA Acc5023
  • Fonds
  • 1880-1882; 1891-1892

This fonds consists of two diaries of Martha Jane Stewart which detail the daily life of a farm family in the West Cape area of Prince Edward Island. Mrs. Stewart mentions the daily weather, homemaking activities, visitors and visiting, and farm events. The February 1881 entries offer a description of her daughter Helen's illness and death due to diphtheria. On 7 December 1881, a baby baptized Francis Walter was born. Walter became very ill and died in April 1882. The second diary reveals that a son Roy started school on 12 October 1891. The young household servant Minnie Murray (1876-1959) also attended school. Martha Jane's husband Farrer seemed to regularly be away from home on business, and the second diary seems to expand the business dealings to include a store.

The diary, which was started by John McEachern and continued by his sons Lauchlin and Dougald after his death, contains daily accounts of weather and life on the farm. This appears to have been the predecessor to his more detailed McEachern genealogy.

O'Connor family fonds : [1876-1971]

  • CA PCA Acc3133
  • Fonds
  • 1876-1971

The fonds consists of diary entries, originating with Maurice O'Connor in 1876, and continued by O'Connor descendants until 1971. Early entries revolve around records of the weather, schooners entering and exiting Cascumpec harbor, fishing and farming, marriages and deaths within the community of Kildare, and trips to Alberton. Frequently mentioned are various members of the Cahill, O'Brien, and Foley families living in the area.

Many of the diary entries revolve around the life of O'Connor family members. In 1895, Maurice records that he had arrived in Alberton thirty years previously on the 14 July 1865. In 1898, he mentions his wife's fifty-fourth birthday, as well as the addresses of Charles and Mary Ann who had recently moved to the United States. It is unclear who continues to write in the journal after Maurice, possibly it was one of Maurice's daughters. Maurice's death was documented in January of 1929 by the simple statement "Pa died."

It is also unclear who of the third generation takes over the journal entries in 1940, except for a brief entry in 1948 by Cyrill O'Connor, who wrote about the principles of war.
