Provincial Treasurer fonds

  • CA PCA RG8
  • Fonds
  • 1775-1981, Photocopied 2003

This fonds consists of the administrative and financial records of the office of the Provincial Treasurer spanning the years 1775 to 1981. The Treasurer was required to keep a set of books in which the accounts of each government office were to be "duly entered, kept, and balanced." Originally, these records were to be presented to the Lieutenant Governor in Council for his inspection at quarterly intervals and upon retirement or removal from office, the books were to be handed on to the Treasurer's successor. Later, the books were examined by the Provincial Auditor. Included among these records are correspondence, journals, day books, various types of ledgers, warrant books, pay lists, bond books, Public Accounts, land assessment rolls, school district boundaries, and records of the office of the Deputy Provincial Treasurer. This fonds is divided into 7 series:

Correspondence
Accounting records
Expenditures
Revenue

  • 1898-1992

This fonds contains the papers of Premiers Donald Farquharson, Arthur Peters, F. L. Haszard, H. James Palmer, John A. Mathieson, Aubin A. Arsenault, J. H. Bell, James D. Stewart, Albert C. Saunders, Walter M. Lea, W. J. P. MacMillan, Thane A. Campbell, J. Walter Jones, Alex W. Matheson, and Alex B. Campbell. The papers consist primarily of correspondence, both incoming and outgoing, arranged variously- chronologically, alphabetically, or by subject; any existing order was maintained. Most of the correspondence is professional although there is some personal material as well, particularly in the Farquharson and Alex B. Campbell material. There are also reports and memoranda scattered throughout. The correspondence documents the daily concerns which were brought to the attention of a premier: transportation, the availability of medical and social services for individuals in need, legal issues, military matters, immigration, employment or reference requests, and policy or electoral issues. In the cases of premiers who also served as the Attorney General there may also correspondence addressed to them in that capacity.
