The fonds consists of textual records of Edward Ned Bolton. It includes business correspondence (1951-52); invoices for the Essington Fish Camp and Cassiar Packing Company Ltd. (1949-1966); a provincial act, agenda, correspondence, minutes, and annual reports for the Provincial Advisory on Indian Affairs in British Columbia (1942-1969); a receipt book for H. Brew, Haysport (1957), and miscellaneous documents (1966-1980) including an assessment notice (1969), salmon price negotiations list (1980), and letterhead for Port Essington Special Reserve, Native Brotherhood of B.C. bearing Edward's name, and the Indian Inquiry Committee.

The fonds consists of 28 black and white photographs taken by Codere in 1955 during her second field work expedition to B.C. 19 of the photos were taken in and around Alert Bay, while the remaining 9 were taken on Hope Island.

Beverley Brown fonds

The fonds consists of 478 photographs, predominantly of students at the St. Michael’s Residential School in Alert Bay. Beverley Brown, her friends, and school supervisors took the photographs between ca. 1937 and ca. 1945 using Brown’s camera. Photographs from this period include shots of the students with their friends and of social events, as well as posed class photographs. The class photographs were taken by school supervisors who subsequently sold the prints to other students. Other photographs were taken in Brown’s hometown, Bella Bella, and in the area of the Namu cannery. These show weddings, fishing boats, landscapes, and buildings. Peter Mason Sr., Brown’s father, had the photographs developed in Vancouver.

Reverend Smith Stanley Osterhout fonds

The fonds consists of 45 glass-plate lantern slides showing scenes from Osterhout’s work with B.C. First Nations, including the Haida, Tsimshian, and Kwakwaka’wakw. The collection includes images of people, totem poles, and landscapes.

Basil and Edythe Hartley fonds

Fonds consists of audio, video, and visual materials created by Basil and Edythe Hartley. Materials include video footage of the Haisla people, which Hartley shot while working in Kitimaat from 1941-1944, a voiceover for the footage which Hartley’s widow, Edythe McClure, created in ca. 1983, a letter, and three photographs of Kitimaat people and landscapes. The three audio cassettes all contain the same 1983 recording.

Harry B. Hawthorn fonds

The fonds consists of records created and collected by Harry B. Hawthorn in a number of different capacities: as researcher, professor, Dean of Anthropology and Director of the Museum of Anthropology. Textual records in the fonds include correspondence, transcripts, research notes and clippings from publications. Much of the graphic materials relate to Harry Hawthorn’s interactions with aboriginal communities as an anthropologist, a professor, and as the Director of MOA. Other images relate to his personal life, documenting his youth in New Zealand, his life as a father and anthropologist, and his later established professional roles.

Ronnie Tessler fonds

The fonds consists of photographs created by Ronnie Tessler from 1986 to 1987 documenting a canoe project by the Nisga’a carver Norman Tait. The project was abandoned in the summer of 1987, and the canoe was left uncompleted. The photographs depict models for the canoe, transportation of the log for the canoe to the Museum of Anthropology, ceremonies performed throughout the project, and various stages of work on the canoe and model. Additional photographs from the same period depict a totem pole raising at Capilano Mall in North Vancouver and portraits of Les Baker, a model Tait wanted to use for a “white man” mask.

The scanned images in this fonds represent a selection of Robert Reford’s amateur photographs found in two albums from his time in British Columbia (1889-1891). The photographs were taken in various parts of British Columbia. They are presented in the order that existed in the original albums.

Fred Ryckman fonds

The fonds consists of records created by Ryckman during his tenure with the Department of Indian Affairs, primarily from the 1920s and '30s. The fonds includes contact sheets copied from photographs that remain in possession of Ryckman’s heirs. Records in the fonds take the form of notes and correspondence. Also included in records is a ledger that contains census information. The fonds also includes photocopies of newspaper articles relating to members of the First Nations with whom Ryckman came into contact as a result of his work, as well as materials relating to Ryckman himself.
