Ivor Dent fonds

This fonds consists of material relating to Ivor Dent's World War II service, teaching and educational career, political involvement including his term as Mayor of Edmonton, and his family and personal life. This fonds also covers Dr. Dent's involvement with various Commonwealth Games organizations including minutes, reports, correspondence, bylaws and constitution for both the Commonwealth Games Federation and the Commonwealth Games Assocciation of Canada. On April 11, 1984, Dr. Dent was invested as a member of the Order of Canada. MS 157.9 includes Commonwealth Games Association of Canada material, political correspondence and clippings, business material, M.Ed Thesis, and other ephemera. MS 157.10 includes Commonwealth Games Association of Canada material, primarily related to the Brisbane, Australia games in 1982, the Aukland, New Zealand games in 1990, and the Victoria, British Columbia games in 1994. This also includes some material related to Dent's activities with the CGAC. Also included inthis fonds is some personal material and other ephemera. MS 157.11 includes material regarding Ivor Dent's Order of Canada, his Commonwealth Medal for the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada, his real estate dealings, his political and social activities (including the New Democratic Party, Municipal Politics, Alberta's Senatorial Election, the Alberta Council on Aging, and the Commonwealth Games Association), his father Charles Lionel Dent, his son Charles Dent, and correspondence and other papers. This fonds also contains publications, including two books from Geoffrey Handley-Taylor, What Peace Means to Me, the REport of the Chief Electoral Officer on the Provincial Senatorial Election, 1989, and Kaleidoscope of Nauru, 1983. MS 157.12 contains material for the Alberta Common Front campaign against cuts to social spending, a collection of business cards, political material, and correspondence and other materials related to Dent's volunteer and business activities. MS 157.13 consists of material on the Alberta Common Front activist movement, SOS Children's Villages of Canada, Commonwealth Games Association of Canada, Victoria Commonwealth Games Society. This fonds also includes cards for the Dent's 50th wedding anniversary, material from courses Dent taught at Grant MacEwan Community College, correspondence and other papers, and a certificate commemorating Dent's acitvity as a volunteer for the International Year of the Volunteer.

The fonds consists of materials created by the City of Edmonton City Clerk's Department between 1893 and 1997. Due to its size, the processed materials in the fonds has been catalogued in separate series according to chronological order and/or subject. Each installment has been numbered sequentially, starting with RG 8 and ending with RG 8.11. The fonds consists of these series:;<b>RG 8 Edmonton Town/ City Secretary Correspondence</b> (1892-1912) The series includes outgoing and incoming correspondence from 1892 until the City of Edmonton's amalgamation with the Town Strathcona in 1912. <b>RG 8.1 Financial Accounts (1892-1915)</b> The series consists of four ledgers detailing the profits and expenditures of the Town/ City of Edmonton, receipts, cash journals and other materials relating to the financial administration of the Town/City of Edmonton. <b>RG 8.2 Debenture (1897)</b> The series consists of a single debenture issued by the Town of Edmonton payable to the order of the Bank of Hamilton. <b>RG 8.3 Miscellaneous (1891-1913)</b> The series consists of a scrapbook, taxation records, legislation, building specifications and other materials. <b>RG 8.4 Election Scrapbooks (1918-1963)</b> The series consists of scrapbooks compiled by the City Clerk's office relating to local elections and election procedures. <b>RG 8.5 Royal Family (1939-1971)</b> The series consists of correspondence relating to various visits to Edmonton by members of the British Royal family. <b>RG 8.6 Miscellaneous (1935-1972)</b> The series contains correspondence, financial documents, election materials, personnel correspondence and other materials. <b>RG 8.7 Public Affairs Committee (1968-1973)</b> The series consists of correspondence created by the Public Affairs Committee and has been futher divided into five sous-series: reports; land development and acquisition; planning of subdivisions; correspondence with Engineering Department; and the development of parks and recreation department. <b>RG 8.8 City Commissioners (1972-1973)</b> The series consists of correspondence between the City Clerk concerning news media coverage of city affairs, public notices and university funding. <b>8.9 Finance and Budget Committee (1968-1973)</b> The series consists of correspondence, reports, minutes and other materials related to the City of Edmonton's Finance and Budget Committee. <b>RG 8.10 Special Committee Reports (1907-1966)</b> The series consists of reports submitted by Special Committees appointed to study specific problems or issues. <b>RG 8.11 Elections Office (1895-1974)</b> The series consists of voter's lists, census documents, photographs, and other materials created by the Elections Office of the City of Edmonton. Council Minutes from 1892 to 1987 are also catalogued but were not given an RG number.

The fonds consists of political papers relating to Dr. Roper's tenure as Mayor of Edmonton from 1959 to 1963. The fonds consists of three series generated by Dr. Roper during his time as Mayor of Edmonton: 1. speeches, proclamations, briefings and other statements. 2. a general correspondence series, containing invitations . acceptances and refusals, greetings and acknowledgements; complaints and compliments, and general commentaries on civic business, The series includes files created by his immediate predecessors as mayor, William Hawrelak, mayor until his resignation in September 1959 and F.J. Mitchell, acting mayor until the municipal election in October 1959. 3. A miscellaneous series of new clippings, reports, incidental documents and a photograph album. The material clearly reflect Dr. Roper's attitudes towards municipal government as well as illustrating the role of the mayor in public relations.
