Biographical history

The Department of Recreation and Tourism, formerly the Department of Recreation, is a department of the Municipality of the County of Inverness, Nova Scotia and serves, primarily, residents and organizations in the municipality. Its stated purpose is to enhance and develop culture, recreation, tourism, and adult education opportunities within the county. Its business is promoting, developing, and coordinating quality cultural and recreational opportunities that are challenging, joyous, and creative; making opportunities accessible for continuous learning, including basic literacy to university level, for the citizens of the county. The department hired it's first director, Gordon Laurence, in 1976. John Cotton became Director in 1977. It was under his direction that the work on the Music Collection project was started and continued between 1993 and 1996. The subsequent director, Donna MacDonald and CEA Kate Beaton, with Council's approval, renewed the project in 2008.

Custodial history

Parts of the collection were held in the basement vault at the Municipality of Inverness County court house under the control of the Municipality and its Department of Recreation and Tourism. Some of the material was borrowed by Au Drochaid in Mabou, NS, and summer students made copies for the museum. Copies were also sent to the Beaton Institute. From 1997 to 1999, the collection was made available to the public under the care of the Celtic Music Project: A Celtic Music Renaissance, and a series of music projects. In 2000 the collection was held at the vault of the Royal Bank of Canada in Port Hawkesbury, N.S. until renovations began there and it was returned to the care of the CMIC Archives. The second part of the project was created at the Celtic Music Interpretive Centre and held there until transferred into the Archives with back up material stored at the Municipal office in Port Hood, N.S.
