Biographical history

James McHale was born in Ireland circa 1837. He married Catherine McKernan (1839-?) in 1859 and they had at least five children. James (1864-?) and William J. (1866-?) were born in New Brunswick, Wallace Frances (1869-?) and Joseph A. (1872-?) were born in New Jersey, in the United States. James had moved to Prince Edward Island by 1873, as he was licensed as a general merchant for a country store in Summerside that year. The following year James and Catherine's fifth child, Charles Edward was born. In 1884, James and his family moved to Colorado, USA.

The fonds consists of a daybook of James McHale, with entries dating from 1877 to1916. Included in the enteries from 1877 to 1884 are accounts for the patrons of his general store in Summerside. The entries after 1884 list the work McHale completed for various individuals as well as his expenditures.
