Biographical history

John Hislop, born in 1856, was a Canadian civil engineer from Galt, Ontario. A graduate of McGill University and an ex-high school teacher he was the Assistant Chief Engineer during the construction of the White Pass and Yukon Route (WP&YR) railway. After the completion of the rail line he married Mary Edith Young in Chicago on January 23, 1901. Hislop died in an accident at the age of 45 on February 22, 1901.

Custodial history

Donated by George Hislop in 2000.

Scope and content

The fonds consists of two copies of "John Hislop's Diary December 17, 1898-February 19, 1901". One is a photocopy of the original handwritten diary and the other is a photocopy of the typewritten transcription of the original. Hislop writes about his daily activities including the progress of the rail line construction, his trips along the route, the Wagon Road Trial, a strike by the employees, the weather, people he encounters, and visits to Ontario and Illinois. George Hislop transcribed the diary in 2000 and added a page of names and terms.
