Biographical history
John Venner Thurgar was born in Yorkshire, England, in 1797. He came to Saint John, New Brunswick, to work as a clerk for his uncle John Lawder Venner, a Loyalist with a wine, spirit, and commission business on North Market Wharf. He took over the business in 1823 and continued to run it for over fifty years, retiring in 1864. He dealt with the United Kingdom, the West Indies, Jamaica and Leeward Islands. His business survived being burnt down in 1837. His son, J. Venner Thurgar, Jr., and John Russell, who was his bookkeeper for 21 years, succeeded him.
Thurgar was a member of the artillery corps of the local militia, rising to the rank of colonel. He was the founding president of the City Bank of Saint John in 1836 and became a director of the Bank of New Brunswick when it was merged with City Bank. He was a director of the Equitable and Marine Insurance companies and senior director of the Bank of British North America for 25 years.
