Journal tenu par George Back lors de l'expédition arctique terrestre dirigée par John Franklin en 1819-1822. Cette expédition a pour but d'explorer le littoral nord du continent, de l'embouchure de la rivière Coppermine en se dirigeant vers l'est. Franklin devra s'y rendre par voie terrestre en bénéficiant du support des compagnies de traite des fourrures. Back s'y distingue par les nombreux croquis qu'il dessine, mais aussi pour avoir sauvé l'équipe de Franklin de la famine en allant chercher de l'aide auprès des Amérindiens. Back est même promu lieutenant le premier janvier 1821, avant même la fin de l'expédition.
