Biographical history

Catherine Anne Stewart was born about 1873, probably in Nova Scotia. In 1891 she entered the provincial Normal School at Fredericton, New Brunswick from Bristol, parish of Kent, Carleton County. She had received some of her early education under the tutelage of Georgie Wheeler, and had taught school for four months prior to enrolling in the Normal School. While studying in Fredericton, Katie Stewart lodged with David Colwell, who lived on George Street. She took classes in natural science, teaching methods, music, and other subjects. In 1892 she was recommended for a Class III teaching license. The remainder of Kate Stewart's life is a mystery. She may have married Asa Bragdon of Grafton, Carleton County in the 1890s.
